I'm in high school and - eh, pretty much? I don't think being in school is some magical time or anything, but I do know that it's where my friends are, that my parents take care of me, and that I'm not expected to be serious and *~grown-up~* and it's socially acceptable for me to spend a ton of time fangirling, daydreaming, and being silly. I mean, I'm 16, so according to most adults my feelings are imaginary, but that doesn't stop me from feeling them- I AM going to miss my friends, I am going to miss my parents, and I am going to miss being a kid.

If I don't say that, then it's "blah blah blah kids grow up to fast appreciate your childhood damnit" and if I do it's "hahaha, kids thinking that childhood experiences matter- after high school you'll never see your high school friends ever again and your whole life completely changes and don't get too attached, kiddo."

That does make sense to me. I guess I wasn't getting exactly that from the OP--but you might be right. I remember right before I started college I was like...so I made friends and a life and now we're just going to all get flung all over the country by ourselves? It's not nothing--it's a huge deal!

But saying "my life is over" sounded more like feeling irrelevant when it's more like the opposite. Not that being young makes you irrelevant, but your adult life is more what defines your life.

For me, the fact that my "youth" (I say that loosely, because obviously being in my 20s, I'm still pretty young by some standards) wasn't all that accomplished makes thinking about the passage of time a even harder for me. I feel like I've used up so much time in my life just getting to a point where I can lead a productive adult life. I know my childhood and adolescence were valuable, but it's hard not to be like, 'Damn, how did I spend 18+ years just on that?'

That definitely makes sense. Of course, what you find out is that everybody probably feels like that at different times in their life. Maybe there are some people who have schedules they stick to--I met one once and it was weird--but for most people there's always going to be times when you feel like you've just figured out something you'd like to do and omg, you've wasted all this time and you're only just starting it now!

So a lot of those people who are "on track" might eventually see all the stuff they've been doing as on the wrong track and they have to start again. It seems like life's starting to naturally shake out that way now that people are living longer. It's not longer strange to have more than one career, for instance. Life for most people is probably down to a serious of accidents that led them to a place they didn't expect.

Also, re: silliness as adults, I remember a party I went to once where a bunch of guys I was friends with in high school were there, though we were now adults. They were acting the same as always, and at one point one of them had poured all this random liquor into a tall glass and was trying to trick another one into drinking it. It was stupid, and the type of thing you could easily be doing at 15 or whatever. So the guy drank some of it and was grossed out and it was ridiculous etc. And when everyone had stopped laughing there was a pause and then someone asked the guy who'd just played this stupid trick what hospital he worked at now--because when he wasn't playing immature pranks he was a surgeon.

Sometimes being a grown up just makes it funnier.

Oh, trust me, you can spend time fangirling, daydreaming and being silly long after you turn 20. As for your friends and parents, they don't have to go anywhere. No, not everyone stays in touch, but it can be done. Not that transitioning from student living at home to independent adult in the Real World is easy, but it isn't the end of the world. It's just a different world that takes a bit of getting used to.

I'm 26, many of my friends are over the age of 30 and we behave grown-up when we have to (jobs, etc.) but most of the time we're silly little fucks who just want to have fun ;D

Also, you don't lose all of your friends automatically after high school. I thought so too, but it didn't happen. On the contrary: I made more friends after school.

You get best of both worlds when you're an adult. People take you seriously, you earn your own money that you can spend on all the merch you want, you can travel whenever and wherever you like, but you're also still free to be a child and just have fun. Sure, society wants to tell us that it's bad to be a "grown child", but I don't give a flying fuck about society.

I can understand feeling that way. But I'm almost 24, and I still spend a good amount of time daydreaming. And I have friends around my age who have graduated college and are working out there in the real world, but who can still be pretty silly at times. You learn to compartmentalize. Sometimes adults look more serious because they're in situations where that's expected of them, like work. Maybe it's not as socially acceptable to be openly silly or fannish, but being "professional" has a lot of limitations like that, and few people are professional all the time. One of my friends and I goof off so much when we're together that it's really hard to picture him in a professional environment. But I know he's able to manage it.

That's not to say you won't change at all as you get older. You probably will. But I think when it's right, it's a natural change, and doesn't feel like you're losing a part of yourself.

I think your feelings are valid, though. And I agree, sometimes adults do dismiss the feelings of kids and teens, which isn't really fair at all. But I think that happens partly because we've all been there and, looking back, the stuff we felt when we were 16 doesn't always feel that major anymore. It can be hard to remember that it genuinely was major for us at the time. That's how life goes a lot of the time. Right now, I find it kind of anxiety-inducing that I'm almost halfway through my 20s. But I'm sure when I'm 30, 24 will seem like a perfectly reasonable age.

Actually with things like facebook and twitter, it's almost as if you never lost touch with anyone. You have to actually physically distance yourself from social media to truly fall out of the loop with your HS friends. It's probably better if you do branch out when you leave HS, imho. Some of the most rewarding experiences I had were when I got out there and met new people.
