I'm not in the fandom, so I can't comment on this particular pairing, but I often like to pair characters with little to no canon interaction. My current favourite pairing hadn't exchanged a word in canon until recently when they got a few lines.

For me, the fun comes from imagining how they would act around each other, how their personalities would match, what they would like and dislike about each other and so on. It's a fun project trying to keep the characters in character and making the pairing work. And I love nothing more than fics that take this kind of pairings and develop the relationship from a scratch in a believable way. I mean, if they never met in canon, let's make them meet in fanfics and create the subtext ourselves.
