Not in the fandom so I can't speak for that ship specifically, but I've had a few ships where I don't recall the characters meeting in canon. Sometimes even if they don't have any scenes together the personalities of certain characters just click for me, and I end up shipping them. I also like crossover parings for the same reason.

I don't think they have? It's either a "They talk behind the scenes, they must, because Mycroft keeps tabs on Sherlock, and Lestrade is with Sherlock often so it's natural", or a 'pair the spares' situation.

....dude, don't go there. Their fangirls are crazy.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a good example of "Pair the Spares".

Though at least in "Hounds", we get Lestrade saying to Sherlock that "I don't always do what you brother tells me to", which at least suggest they know each other and Mycroft gives him orders, or at least tries to. (-:

I'm not in the fandom, so I can't comment on this particular pairing, but I often like to pair characters with little to no canon interaction. My current favourite pairing hadn't exchanged a word in canon until recently when they got a few lines.

For me, the fun comes from imagining how they would act around each other, how their personalities would match, what they would like and dislike about each other and so on. It's a fun project trying to keep the characters in character and making the pairing work. And I love nothing more than fics that take this kind of pairings and develop the relationship from a scratch in a believable way. I mean, if they never met in canon, let's make them meet in fanfics and create the subtext ourselves.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate Mystrade because I (incorrectly) believe that if people didn't write it, they'd be writing more Sherlock/Lestrade. But most likely they'd probably just wouldn't write anything.

Still can't read the fic, though. Even when it's good, it's meaningless to me.

They don't have to talk in order for you to ship it. If you're one of the "OMG THEY'RE SO IN LOVE! CANT YOU SE??!11?" fans, then yea it's weird. But if you just like to see them bang or you like to explore the possible dynamic, then that's cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't ship it, but while they don't communicate in canon, there is a scene in "Hounds" where Sherlock accuses Lestrade of being sent to watch over him by Mycroft, which implies they at least have a business relationship.

Here's the scene in question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LUW2h322ps

Never been on a blind date? Never had two friends who've never met, but you think, 'Those two would really hit it off'? While the characters may never have met, the fans certainly know both characters, and I think shipping on those grounds is just as valid as on-screen chemistry. *shrugs*

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Pair the spares?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess you just don't have imagination. People can easily ship things based on how their personalities work.

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got so distracted by Rupert Graves that I forgot to read your secret. I am ashamed.

On the one hand I felt the same about Alex/Owen on Nikita (who have definitely never met in canon and it's really unclear at this point if they will) when they got super duper popular over the summer. It's just like...where did that come from? So I can relate there.

But at the same time, eh, whatever. People shipping odd pairings don't bother me. The behavior of some of those shippers can be extremely obnoxious, but that's true of shippers of canon ships too.

Are you new to fandom? What's so difficult to understand about a pairing? I love crossovers and I've never seen anyone confused about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
While I have before and probably will again ship characters who haven't interacted onscreen and don't begrudge anyone their pleasure, I just have a "no" reaction to Lestrade/Mycroft. I started a Seuss-inspired rhyme about how many ways I will not read the pairing (I will not read it on its own, I will not read in a John and Holmes... fic; I will not read an AU-verse, I will not... It's not finished).

Luckily, don't like/don't read keeps me happy.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
In Once Upon a Time my OTP is Archie/Ruby, and they've so far been in one scene together in canon and haven't spoken together (though there were shots that weren't used of him looking longingly at the diner where she works, so, something). However, if you think that the characters work well together, who cares if they actually spoke together?

[identity profile] faithgrowsold.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it matter when you can have an OTP as glorious as them? ♥

I can sort of get it. Part 'pair the spares', part speculation, part other Holmes canon/adaptations. I don't see it myself, I only really enjoyed it when it was a compliment or contrast to John/Sherlock.

Since series two I get it less though. SPOILERS:
