1) find pictures I like and save them to my harddrive, usually in "themed" folders
2) when I have the time, make an icon or twenty
4) delete saved photos
3) post icons
Usually there was a space of time between each of these steps ranging from days to months. I honestly wouldn't remember where I found most of the pictures, even if I'd tried - although I did try to credit the general site I found stuff on (usually Corbis, Veer, Getty, or Flickr or fansites) and most of the icons I made were stock, not fannish.
And I can't speak for anyone but myself, but the reason I liked credit was so that other people could find my stuff. It makes sense, right? I mean, how many of us have gone to check out someone's icon page after we see an icon of theirs we like? I know I do it all the time. *shrug*
But in general, yes, I do think that if an icon maker is using art (be it fannish or pro) or screencaps or something in their work, they should credit their sources. A lot of us used to have a resource page for that kind of thing. :)
