I understand icon makers wanting credit, but I agree that they should make a point to credit the original source of the works they create icons from, too. Not doing so is rather shitty.

I nothing more to say than, IA completely OP

Definitely agreed on fanart icons.

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never understood why people get so shitty about this stuff to be honest. Yeah it's nice to get credit/recognition for making icons people like/use. But almost everything people actually make icons out of is stolen anyway. Even if you make the screencaps yourself then you're still only using images from a film/television show/photograph that somebody else shot/acted/directed/whatever.

Unless the person is actually iconing pictures they photographed themselves there's just no good reason for people to bitch about others not giving them credit.

In the unlikely event I actually managed to make an icon someone would want to use (unlikely because I'm not very good at making graphics and I rarely make icons anyway) I really wouldn't give a fuck if somebody credited me or not.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wanting credit for icons the iconmaker capped for in particular makes sense to me because there's extra work involved. I appreciate it when people credit iconmakers because it makes it easier for me to track down good icons.

This is like saying that fanfic shouldn't be credited because it's based off of other people's characters. I don't understand this argument at all.

What? Icon makers do far more than "make it small." The crop of an icon can change the entire perspective of the picture, not to mention the colors, textures, or layering used. And icons are by far the most popular/commonly used type of fanart. Why shouldn't icon makers want credit?

Most of the icon posts I've seen do credit their screencap sources. Those that don't should, too, I think - although just taking caps doesn't involve the same artistic license as making icons does.

[identity profile] faithgrowsold.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I only ever credit icons so that if someone likes it they can go find it/others by that maker. I get so annoyed when someone has an icon I like and I can't find out who made it (or if I don't recognize the person in it and they don't say who it is ;~;)

[identity profile] fooish-icons.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. Well, I haven't posted icons in a while (lol, like, two years) but when I did, this was my process:

1) find pictures I like and save them to my harddrive, usually in "themed" folders
2) when I have the time, make an icon or twenty
4) delete saved photos
3) post icons

Usually there was a space of time between each of these steps ranging from days to months. I honestly wouldn't remember where I found most of the pictures, even if I'd tried - although I did try to credit the general site I found stuff on (usually Corbis, Veer, Getty, or Flickr or fansites) and most of the icons I made were stock, not fannish.

And I can't speak for anyone but myself, but the reason I liked credit was so that other people could find my stuff. It makes sense, right? I mean, how many of us have gone to check out someone's icon page after we see an icon of theirs we like? I know I do it all the time. *shrug*

But in general, yes, I do think that if an icon maker is using art (be it fannish or pro) or screencaps or something in their work, they should credit their sources. A lot of us used to have a resource page for that kind of thing. :)

I get why they want credit because it is somewhat trickier than just making a pic smaller. I give credit because I too have found icons and icon makers through others that way.

But I do agree with you that people should try to credit the artists who made the original image as well. I've tried to track down fanart in icons so I could see more of the artist's work or use the original as a wallpaper or something, but then when I tried to find the original people often didn't know who made it, where it came from. It's a selfish reason, but still.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Icon makers who demand credit but don't credit their own sources are hypocrites.

[identity profile] moose-princess.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It really bugs me when I see what looks to be a really cool piece of fanart in an icon, but the fanart is uncredited so I can't see the whole thing.

I've had multiple occasions where I've asked about the source of some fanart icon and the maker couldn't tell me where it came from. And in that case it seems really hypocritical to be so serious about crediting when using their icon.

Pretty much unless it's one of the icons I animated myself by hand (such as the one I'm using now) I'm pretty easy-going about crediting or not crediting when I make icons. I think what really bothers me though even more is "Textless icons are not bases!" Because that just seems pointlessly stuck-up to me. I'd be fine with "don't use as a base without credit" but I dislike "you can't alter this in any way if you want to use it!" Especially if it's fanart and the icon maker can't remember where it came from!

I always thought demanding credit for cropping something was a bit skeevy.

(I understand some icons take a lot more effort, but I don't really use those anyway so eh.)

To me all my icons are obvious where they originally came from so I never bothered with this issue... I just credit because it's easier than making my own which I used to do. But I think you bring up a good point that I hadn't thought before.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Lately I've been getting around this whole crediting thing by making my own icons. They may not be fancy but they are fine enough.

Aaaand this is why I'm uncomfortable using fanart I can't source for icons. Sometimes you pick up random pictures off Google or 4chan or Gelbooru by some obscure artist you couldn't begin to find, so shit happens. But it seems gross to turn around and demand credit for it. Then there's crediting textures and brushes, which is difficult when you can't remember what all you used for each picture.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaaand this is why I avoid making fanart icons.

When I do, I always try to credit the original source and get the artist's permission, if possible. ♥;

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what I hate about Tumblr TBH.

It's always oh look someone's posting bits of great fanart i'd love to see the origina---FUUUUUUUCK LEARN TO CREDIT jesus christ.

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
i get a lot of my source images from uncredited places like 4chan (w/e) so if i make a post and people seem interested in the art used in an icon, i give it to them. sometimes i can recognise the artist but most times i can't, so tough luck for them i guess

at the same time, i never ask for credit, because i think it's stupid. most people credit the community anyway so it makes no sense to turn it into an obligation that the same amount of people are going to follow anyway

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
this!

credit where credit is de. goes for icon makers & icon users as well. wtf mannn

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
and sometimes readers couldn`t be bothered to leave a smile because of a reason

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I never credit; I don't feel bad about that, even though I maybe should, at least a little bit. It is just that when I rarely find nice icon I usually just save it, then forget to use it and when I finally refind it from some random picture folder I cannot remember anymore where I found it. For the every icon I use, when they are cropped from fanart, I try to give fandom something back by allowing people use my fanart freely, credits participatory.
