It really bugs me when I see what looks to be a really cool piece of fanart in an icon, but the fanart is uncredited so I can't see the whole thing.

Sometimes, depending on how heavily edited it is, you can plug the image into http://www.tineye.com and it can come up with other versions of the image. I've done that a couple of times. It'd probably work okay for an icon like the one you currently have because there aren't any funky effects on it.

doesnt work for icon to original fanart

It doesn't always find the original piece of art posted by the fan artist, but it will find other incidences of the image online which can help because the other people posting it may have added attribution.
