To be truthful, the "pretend-to-be-in-love" plot was created by Peeta and had the unfortunate consequence of forcing Katniss into a relationship with him. You can either view this as he wasn't thinking about the consequences or he is very manipulative. He certainly is very good at manipulating an audience.

If there is one thing he did, he never did hide his feelings (or hide them well.)

As to the romance, well the romance was really the entire point of the story wasn't it? The rest of the plot felt like the additions.

Making the Nice Guy connection makes me upset. Before this was brought up, I liked Peeta/Katniss. :C

And in any normal situation, making up a scheme to pretend to be a couple with someone you actually do hope to someday date is fucking terrible.

However. Their lives literally depended on the audience caring about them, and that meant they needed to have a lot of "hooks". This was established so much by that point it's not even funny. Cinna did as much as he could with their outfits, but when Katniss didn't come off as particularly interesting in her interview, the reader could pretty much feel their support dropping. Peeta had already run this plan by Haymitch, who didn't have any goals besides their survival, and... I don't know, I think that while relationship autonomy is really fucking important, it takes a backseat to not being dead. The fake relationship was probably the best possible hook. Just look at us- people absolutely love shipping.

I've had actual Nice Guys in my life. I've had two guys try to pressure and manipulate me into dating them. And for one of those times, it actually did involve a fake relationship situation (I'm gay and he was offering to be my beard, so.) But, you know. That whole "dying horribly" element was not involved in my actual experiences.

Seriously, this reminds me of a few weeks ago when people were complaining about the suicide in the Arena. Arena =////////= real life. Rules in real life don't apply there. They just don't. I think Peeta was pushing the relationship on Katniss because Peeta actually cared about her and he wanted her to live, and in this situation that is by far the best way to ensure she lives. He thought she reciprocated and was kinda crushed when she didn't, but he didn't make her life miserable over it in CF like the typical Nice Guy would. This is nothing like a Nice Guy situation because the Arena is involved and you say/do what you have to say and do to live.

Looking at the situation in-context of the Games, Peeta's actions can be rationalized. "Just look at us- people absolutely love shipping." I'd have to say Collins, Peeta, and Haymitch understand how shipping works.

On the writer's half, it looks problematic. Collins set the situation up where Peeta had been admiring Katniss from afar. Then he and Haymitch put Katniss in situation she wasn't prepared for. Collins could have made Peeta not an admirer from afar, but still have made him fall for Katniss after he gets to know her. Peeta could have tried to save her and not be in love. (When Katniss thinks that whatever happens they will be close friends at the end is one of my favourite parts. That is how it could have been played; a romance could have been developed later.) An entirely different scheme could have been produced to get them sponsors.

In regards to real-life Nice Guys, I've certainly never had to deal with it like you (my sympathies by the way), but I have had to deal with minor elements of before. So perhaps I can draw somewhat from my experiences, but not so much.
