So you don't want to hear about fandom and source material can be problematic, gotcha.

lol mte

TBF, they said sf_d style of arguing, not their arguments. I don't know if OP feels the same, but in some places in fandom it seems that calling out *isms and *phobias is used as a way to "win" arguments instead of legit addressing issues. If you can prove the other person is more privileged than you, you automatically win everything!

I don't think discussing problematic things is bad. Arguing in that "sf_d" manner doesn't help anything though.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more the whole SF_D way of arguing that is problemetic, as in, someone fucks up and says something that someone deems offensive and everyone dogpiles them. Then they aplogise and they continue being dogpiles and their fuck up brought up for the rest of their LJ lives. It seems this happens in just about every second SF_D post.

Also, "You sound white" is the most dismissive and ridiculous way to 'win' an argument, as people seem to say it to POC more often than not. They might as well say, "I don't care what you have to say, so STFU".

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I also love when "shut up str8" gets thrown around to "win" an argument. Also often at people who are, you know, not straight.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Let me guess, you're straight.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
No, actually, I'm not. I just happen to dislike people acting like assholes.

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not and I agree.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
But nope, they'd rather be racist about it and then claim that you're the racist one because you're not a minority or something. D:

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The sf_d style of arguing doesn't necessarily mean sf_d arguments. From my (admittedly limited) experience with that comm, it's not so much the content of the arguments that make it unpleasant, it's the sense of "whoever yells the longest and the loudest with the most profanity wins." I understand where the OP is coming from, since lately it seems like my fandom has jumped off that cliff recently too, and it has nothing to do with the sort of things that you'd usually associate with SJWs. In fact, it's gone down more or less like the following example, about something about as relevant as my fake example here.

Prima: I like cake.
Secunda: FUCK YOU IDIOT CAKE FUCKING SUCKS YOU'RE A MORON AND A SHITHEEL AND YOU FUCKING SUCK!
Prima: WTF?! What did I do?
Secunda: OH YOU'RE BACKING OUT NOW?! CAPSLOCK RAEG!!!!! I'M NOT EXPLAINING SHIT TO YOU!!!! RAAAR!
Prima: Fuck this shit, I'm out.
Secunda: FUCK YEAH I WIN!!!!!

If I'm correct, that's what the OP was referring to, something along those lines.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I got from the secret. Not so much a problem with people pointing out questionable things in source material or fandom, but rather the whole whoever-can-yell-the-loudest wins. Also, dog piling seems to be big with this style of argument.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm one of the first people to side-eye those who seem like they just don't want anyone to criticize things they like, but to be fair, I get the impression that the OP is talking more about the style of arguing, which I can understand and agree with to varying extents depending on the context.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I thought it was pretty possible to have a discussion about problematic aspects of media and fandom without devolving into a shouting match about who's more privileged than who and yelling at people that their input and experiences don't matter solely because they have more privilege than you, even when they're not privileged in the problematic area being discussed.
Also, "you sound insert-majority-group-here" is about as effective a counter-argument as "you used the wrong their/there/they're."

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
This kind of comment is probably what the OP is talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
oooooor...let's see...doesn't want to have every single utterance they make about anything at all picked over for "evidence" of whatever the thought crime of the week is at the whim of BNF wannabes who have decided that whacking people over the head with pseudo-academic jargon and spurious and specious accusations of holding "problematic" opinions (and isn't problematic the most weaselly of weasel words on LJ these days?) is the sure-fire route to being non-gender-specific monarch of the fandom hill. I expect, like many of us, the OP is sick of being traduced by people for whom being a big fish in a small pond is worth carrying out slander and misrepresentation in the guise of social justice whilst actually achieving nothing worth regarding as actual social justice whatsoever. I prefer bullies to just get on with bullying, if that's what bolsters their egos, rather than painting themselves as heroes in the process. The stench of self-righteousness and hypocrisy and back-slapping circle-jerkery over on sf_d these days is overwhelming

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's totally what sf_d is about.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
sf_d has made 'problematic' devoid of all meaning anymore.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize that there's a reason their comm name is "sf_drama," don't you? I can be hella interested in thoughtful discussions about the intersection of fandom and social justice. Wake me when any of the discussions on sf_d leave "vitriolic, accusatory" behind and get into "thoughtful."

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
you are delusional if you think that's what happens on sf_d

oh, and while you're there, define "problematic"

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This x100. Sometimes it would be nice to be able to have a light conversation about fandom without the fear of people jumping all over you for insignificant slights or whatever butthurt feelings they might be having that day.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-13 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a pain in the ass fandom O_O
