I suppose one interpretation of how uncomfortable Joker's "advances" make Batman is that he's got some repressed sexuality issues going on...in my own head I still can't get into the idea of Bats actually being attracted to Joker though.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
And to be fair, it's the Joker. Nearly anyone who isn't Harley Quinn would be made uncomfortable by his advances.

Unless you're talking about Nolan!verse Joker, of course. The sheer amount of fangirling over his nurse's outfit was eye-opening to say the least!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, but if the fangirls saw that smelly, sweaty, rotten-toothed terrorist IRL, they'd run for the hills.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but you don't have to be attracted to someone to be uncomfortable with their advances if you're not comfortable with your sexuality.

Read Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth if you want to see Grant Morrison poke at Batsy's deep-seated sexuality issues a bit.

the TPB of that is in my bathroom right now, ngl

Hey, the canon is rich with homoerotic subtext, and the gay reading of Batman has been around for decades! Don't worry about it, just kick back and enjoy. I have pretty terrible slash goggles (...for a slash fan...), and it's kinda hard not to see it. I also second the Arkham Asylum rec.

doesn't matter if you don't ship him with anyone, seeing Bats as gay is perfectly legit

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well Anon, there's always Worlds Finest if you're ever in the mood for some super subtext-y comics. ;) I 3rd on the Arkham Asylum TPB, too.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Play Arkham City. Oh god, the subtext.

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Was it even sub text at that point?

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
...Good point.

Normally even I would hesitate to use Homestuck terms for anything else, but this is the case that's cited more than any other as the equivalent when explaining it to comics people, so what the hell.

Batman and Joker have a kismesis. They hate each other, legitimately. But they hate the way other people love. Joker will never care as much about anybody such as the the way he hates batman (or hate anybody else, he's monogamous). The day batman dies is the day joker dies. He can't go on without that man in his life to despise.

I don't know what Homestuck is, but you just summed them up perfectly. There can't be a Joker without Batman, and vice versa (did I just completely eff-up that spelling??).

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I think it's pretty one sided. I do think that Batman could go on without the Joker. Batman does have a lot of other Rogues to focus on (and crime in general) and he does have a family. No matter sucky he is at actually communicating with them and, you know, actually being a parent (regardless of whether or not they *call* him that, he fills that role in their lives at least partially) they do love him. So yeah, I think Batman would be able to get over the Joker, though I do think the Joker has left a permanent mark on him. Especially given how much damage the Joker has done to the Bat!family specifically. Basically, he was Batman before the Joker, and he has enough other stuff in his life to keep him going without the Joker.

The Joker on the other hand, has very little in his life. He's got Harley, but most interpretations show him not actually caring all that much about her beyond the convenience of having her around. So for him to lose Batman would be devastating and he'd never, ever recover.

I'm only vaguely familiar with Homestuck and its relationship dynamics, but that's a handy little term and fits about perfectly.

Maybe it's the billionaire playboy angle. Feels like too much of an act. Which it is, but different conclusion.

So...while I don't think Batman is gay, it is now headcanon that the rest of Gotham thinks Bruce Wayne is.

"No way, Bruce Wayne?"
"Taking out a new girl every night? Feels like some misdirection to me."

Of course. Because people in Gotham need to be suspicious, but they're too stupid to know he's Batman. It's perfect.

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I would laugh my ass off if that happened up in canon. Especially if Bruce was all, "Well, that wasn't the plan, but whatever works..."

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
JLU Bruce is so gay for Clark that it's actually kind of pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
God, yes. THIS.
