Normally even I would hesitate to use Homestuck terms for anything else, but this is the case that's cited more than any other as the equivalent when explaining it to comics people, so what the hell.

Batman and Joker have a kismesis. They hate each other, legitimately. But they hate the way other people love. Joker will never care as much about anybody such as the the way he hates batman (or hate anybody else, he's monogamous). The day batman dies is the day joker dies. He can't go on without that man in his life to despise.

I don't know what Homestuck is, but you just summed them up perfectly. There can't be a Joker without Batman, and vice versa (did I just completely eff-up that spelling??).

Personally, I think it's pretty one sided. I do think that Batman could go on without the Joker. Batman does have a lot of other Rogues to focus on (and crime in general) and he does have a family. No matter sucky he is at actually communicating with them and, you know, actually being a parent (regardless of whether or not they *call* him that, he fills that role in their lives at least partially) they do love him. So yeah, I think Batman would be able to get over the Joker, though I do think the Joker has left a permanent mark on him. Especially given how much damage the Joker has done to the Bat!family specifically. Basically, he was Batman before the Joker, and he has enough other stuff in his life to keep him going without the Joker.

The Joker on the other hand, has very little in his life. He's got Harley, but most interpretations show him not actually caring all that much about her beyond the convenience of having her around. So for him to lose Batman would be devastating and he'd never, ever recover.

I'm only vaguely familiar with Homestuck and its relationship dynamics, but that's a handy little term and fits about perfectly.
