You're not alone, anon. This movie made me terrified of clowns. Ick. It's just a movieeee!!

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This movie instilled a fear of a lot of things, but not clowns. Storm drains, shower drains, sinks, sewers, the dark...a lot of shit that I'm irrationally terrified of is because of this movie, but I have absolutely no problem with clowns.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I was under the assumption that everyone and their mom was afraid of clowns.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was scared of them long before I read the book/saw the movie, but after doing both, I can't go near anyone who even wears too much make up.

[identity profile] nabradia.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought everyone claimed to be afraid of clowns because of this movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Killer Klowns from Outerspace did the same thing for me. Which is kind of embarrassing to admit given how awful that movie is, but that shit is terrifying when you're 6.

"popcorn, why?"

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a whole generation of people with this phobia because their parents allowed them to watch this movie as children. After working in a Halloween haunted house dressed as a scary clown, I noticed an interesting trend. Older generations didn't seem to have this phobia and I didn't see too many young children with it, either. However, there were tons of young adults and teens who were really terrified (especially the boys). I now refer to them as the IT generation.

Oh. Stay away from Halloween haunted houses, too.

I was afraid of clows way before this, but yeah, it didn't help at all.

My captcha is "full darlfun". I don't know what 'darlfun' is, but I bet it floats D:

I had a pretty bad confrontation with a clown when I was about 6 or so and that pretty much killed any affection for them I had. I'm not frightened of them, but they creep me out something fierce. I saw "It" (and then that episode of Buffy, "Nightmares") and the feeling just multiplied. I do not like clowns. I had to go to the circus with my niece and nephew a year ago and I was completely miserable. Which is so stupid considering I'm, like, 20, but whatever.

It's not just IRL, though. I saw that clown episode of Supernatural about 3 months ago and I still got so freaked out. Had to watch cartoons afterward to get my mind off it. >.<" Ugh. Clowns.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The movie that really gave me a clown phobia was Demonic Toys. There's this jack in the box that is so fucking frightening.

Like *sproing* face eating time naow. DDDDD:

I saw this as a kid with my friends. Everyone else almost peed their pants and insisted we stop watching after the first five minutes, to my great disappointment. A few years later I finally got my hands on the movie and watched it alone.

I found out I wasn't scared of the clown, but extremely attracted to it. (I blame Tim Curry, I swear he's got that effect on me in every role I've seen him in.) But I'm one of those weird people (and in the minority, probably) who have liked clowns all their life and never seen them as scary. I think it has a lot to do with my childhood; clowns were the best part of circuses for me, I had a few cute clown-themed toys and dolls, my favorite children's program featured a clown (again, other kids found this show creepy), I dressed up as a clown a few times, etc... My parents didn't want to raise me playing with girl toys only but didn't want to pressure me into playing with boys' toys either; clowns were neutral because they could be for both girls and boys, & they were colorful instead of color-coded (pink for girls, blue for boys). Whereas my friends who hate clowns were never that familiar with clowns. I think it's the anxiety of the unknown that triggers the fear with clowns - they're very characteristic, personalized and expressive in their own way, yet a clown is still essentially a disguise. It's a fake person who communicates differently than a normal adult. It makes sense to be afraid of a stranger.

All my friends are terrified of IT, and a few even developed Coulrophobia because of him, just like you, so I understand. It's nothing to be ashamed of IMO, and very common. If I'm not mistaken it's one of the most common phobias, even.

If you really can't deal with it even if you want to, go see someone about it.

I used to be terrified of that movie. I watch this (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/28239-it) and it now doesn't frighten me as much as it used to.

Clowns are TERRIFYING, oh my god

I've never seen that movie and I know I never can. Which sucks, cause I love Tim Curry and I like Stephen King and am always trying to push myself with horror flicks, to like prove (to myself) how tough and ~manly~ I am? BUT NOT THIS TIME. NO. FUCK CLOWNS (and also spiders.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Dear sweet fuck, I wish I could cry "trigger warning!" on that, but that's just stupid of me. XD (even just a little warning, anyone? no? okay then.)

Well, looks like I'll spend tonight cowering under the sheets, sleepless and chanting a relentless mantra of prayers. Oi.

You are not alone

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
The book scared the bejeezus out of me but I felt the movie was eh. I still, however, have fingermarks from where my friend gripped me while we watched it. Probably I'm missing something.

[identity profile] 100101011.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
odd, a friend and i were just discussing yesterday how when we were young we used to cross the street if we encountered a storm drain. i think that movie terrified any child who watched it. i had so many nightmares about it when i was young. and then as an adolescent i read the book and realized that until then i didn't even know what being scared shitless WAS. i can quite enjoy both now, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
After the movie came out, they did new cover art for the book that had that damn clown on it. I couldn't go to sleep if his creepy face was at all visible on the bookshelf - when I wasn't reading it, it was face down, pages facing out (because there was a little clown face on the spine).

[identity profile] fulgaraverde.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
I was already pretty afraid of clowns, and my friends basically forced me to watch this anyway. Yeah. Didn't help. It was bad enough before, but now I am genuinely terrified of them.

[identity profile] chocolate-frapp.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated the fuck out of clowns way before I ever saw this movie.

[identity profile] tonicat.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Saw about half of IT when I was six (hiding behind the couch), didn't know IT died and the next day was taken to the circus. I was a pretty cute kid and of course the effin clown was going to go up to me! Screamed my head off and my clown phobia was born.

I've tried getting over it by re-watching the movie, reading the book but I still almost pass out and get cold sweats whenever I see a picture or a video with clowns in it. At least my family and friends find it hilarious.

*Cool Story, Bro*

I have never seen "It" because I am already freaked out by clowns.

And Gamzee Makara has NOT HELPED ME.
