I want to like her, but her character in the reboot was just badly written, imo (Which is a huge problem in Hollywood in general, I know.) I hate how bitchy they made her in a few scenes, towards Kirk especially. Although he deserved it at first, her 'I hope you know what you're doing, Captain' really rubbed me the wrong way.

So if they at least attempt to make her anything like TOS!Uhura, sign me up.

Might want to rethink your reasoning and ponder on your use of "bitchy". Think: a lot of things Kirk did was with the same kind of attitude, but was he ever called "bitchy" or uppity or whatever?

da
yeah I have heard him referred to as bitchy. And it kinda fits.
Though I like them both. They're both kinda bitchy.

DA Agreed. Kirk is way bitchier than Uhura. Which is kind of why I like him (like them both, really) so much.

DA

Yeah, you just lost any credibility by linking to that cesspool of a blog. Melissa McEwan is a completely hateful shithead.

Even hateful shitheads can make a good point now and then.

I actually found her reaction pretty realistic. Kirk was something of a maverick, had just got suspended, and then suddenly he's in charge of a ship? Even Bones, his best friend, was sceptical. And like you say, she had every reason to be bitchy to Kirk, more so if she'd found out (or realised) that he'd used her roommate to hack the Kobayashi Maru.

But whatever, I liked her as soon as she brushed off Kirk at the bar and talked her way onto the Enterprise. You go girl. I didn't like that they had to go and make her a love interest anyway, but you can't win 'em all. Spuhura is kinda cute anyway, even if I did want more backstory.

it would have been better if they'd framed her issues with kirk under this light as well, but the movie made it seem her antagonism came mostly from that one time he was obnoxious and inappropriate and hit on her in a bar, not job related reasons. the hacking thing with gaila didn't make it to final cut.

and for the record, i'm firmly on the "disinterested in uhura" side of the divide. i def do not hate her. the only main character of the ensemble that grates on me is mccoy.

DA, I had no idea that was where her problem with him came from. I thought they were trying to do the Slap Slap Kiss thing with them (ugh, pet peeve, pet peeve!) and overshot into Pure Antagonism Land. That makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE!

Pretty much all of this.

I actually like Nu!Uhura - but TOS!Uhura was awesome X3

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
... Given the situation the "I hope you know what you're doing, Captian" was remarkably restrained. He'd deliberately provoked a violent altercation to remove the captain from command and replace him with himself! And everyone knows that he thinks they shouldn't meet up with the rest of the armada, but instead launch an attack... which they all know has a high probability of failure.

From Uhura's perspective he's an out of control hot head who might be sending them all to their deaths! And she has no reason to trust his decisions - he's never been in command before, so unlike in TOS where he's had years to build up trust there is no reason what so ever for her to think that what he just did will result in anything other than their deaths.
