I agree that being indifferent doesn't indicate misogyny and going out of your way to actively hate her- or any character- is probably a sign you have issues of some kind.

But you miss a big area dividing it into active hate and then indifference. It's perfectly possible to dislike a character or find them really annoying without hating them. I would probably not get along with Uhura if I knew her personally IRL- that's just because some personality traits of hers rub me the wrong way. But, that's different from calling her and women like her are bad and wrong and stupid and saying her and women like her suck, or whatever.

I actually agree with this. Feel free to not like Uhura - there are definitely characters I dislike in the movie - but there's a difference between saying "No, I'm really not interested in Uhura," and "No, I'm not interested in Uhura because she's a stuck-up bitch who broke up the K/S romance (or destroyed the holy triumvirate, or whatever)." I hear the latter a lot more than I do the former, and yeah, I judge them harshly.

I agree with the whole second half of the secret, but disagree with hate=misogyny. For one, people use the word "hate" a lot when that's not really what they mean. For two, you can validly dislike a character for your own reasons without it having to do with gender, color, whatever. Just because I dislike a female character doesn't make me a sexist or misogynist.

[identity profile] strawberrytatoo.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to like her, but her character in the reboot was just badly written, imo (Which is a huge problem in Hollywood in general, I know.) I hate how bitchy they made her in a few scenes, towards Kirk especially. Although he deserved it at first, her 'I hope you know what you're doing, Captain' really rubbed me the wrong way.

So if they at least attempt to make her anything like TOS!Uhura, sign me up.

Hey, but she's a bit stuck-up, judgmental, and in cases apparently thinks she's above authority. I fucking love her, I'm just saying. There are things about her than can be polarizing, especially in light of how they removed some of the sense of humor her character had in TOS.
But let's face it, tons of people hate her for really bad reasons, so rage if you need to rage I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I happen to love her, but I don't think hating her automatically makes you a misogynist. It depends on the reason you hate her, really. (People are allowed to hate female characters, you know.)

I just wish that they had done more than stick her in the role of "love interest."
After that little fact got revealed everything she did involved Spock in some way. Comforting Spock, kissing Spock goodbye (oh, and how the hell would a Vulcan (even a half-Vulcan) be okay with opening macking with someone in public like that?).

Why did she have to be put in that role? Why did there HAVE to be a love interest, other than to make Kirk/Spock a little less gay?

I LOVED TOS Uhura. And while I don't hate New Uhura, I'm disappointed with how they used her.

I think some fans were disappointed because she didn't have the same feel as the original Uhura, which I agree with. Other than that, I'm completely with you on the possibly misogyny since I've witnessed it in the fandom.

Zoe as an actress well, I didn't really understand her labeling herself as just Black, because she's Dominican/Puerto Rican. We are generally mixed people with a genetic makeup of european/african/and possible amerindian/taino (unlikely due to the genocide of the native people lead by Christopher Colombus).

Our cultures are different. To me, it seems as if she was labeling herself as so for fans who aren't familiar with Dominican and Puerto Rican genetic ancestry. Imo, she should have just stuck with "Hispanic" or maybe "Black Hispanic". That's another secret for another day though.

Ahhhh, NUhura wank again. It's been awhile. I share some of your annoyed sentiments with regards to fans calling her a "bitch" or a "slut" but I don't totally agree with the wording of the rest of the secret? Actively disliking a character because you think they're poorly written, or cruel, or unlikable, etc, are all valid reasons that are not intrinsically tied to misogyny. So I take exception to your secret there.

However, I have heard a lot of really flimsy/gross reasons for "hating" Uhura, most of linked back to K/S, and it makes me so white-hot-fly-off-the-handle mad that my fandom could be so immature. That, or the "SHE BROKE UP THE TRIFECTA" argument. I'm just as much as a stickler for including as much canon from TOS as the next rabid fan, but I honestly don't see the problem if we feature all four of them as prominent characters.

Also, I'm irritated by the argument that she's nothing like TOS!Uhura; are we forgetting that this is a radically different timeline from the TOS one? I think it's more interesting that she's a little less warm and friendly than the prime Uhura, and considering how utterly altered this timeline is, I think it's perfectly reasonable that she would be different. It's funny how fandom embraced a much more emotional Spock so wholeheartedly but cast a less emotional Uhura off to the side :\

Anyway. Don't totally agree with the secret but I share your frustration.

It is possible to not like a character for reasons other than sexism, race or their romantic love interest.

I don't hate the character, hates too strong word, but I did think she was rude to Kirk when she first met him. Later on in the film? Yeah, she had reasons, especially if she and her roomate were close at all, but at first? Calling someone a dumb hick who only has sex with farm animals that you only just met? That's rude! (and harsh, and judgmental and also stuck-up).

The impression I got from that scene when I first watched it was that she was basically saying "you're not in a cadet uniform, you're here picking up women in a bar, therefore you must be dumb and not at all discernible", which rubbed me the wrong way and ruined her character for the rest of the film for me.

It's really too bad that scene was at the beginning of the film, had they established her a bit before that scene, I might have had a chance to warm up to her.

My disapproval of her behavior has nothing to do with her gender, though. I also thought both Spock and Kirk each had their own asshole moments in the movie, too (and before anyone jumps on my back, Spock's big asshole moment came before his planet blew up and his mother died, i.e., his rubbing Kirk's dad's death in Kirk's face at the Kobayashi Maru trial... I do realize that for the rest of the film he was emotionally compromised and therefore any asshole moments from there on out were understandable). Here's hoping all the writers allow all three characters to grow a bit by the next film, which I have faith they will. These three characters were, after all, very young during the events in that film.

I am willing to like Uhura, I want to like her, if the writers show her as gaining some manners.

I'm not a fan. She's really in-your-face almost all the time and I wish she'd turn it down a little bit. That's pretty much my complaint with the whole movie -- no fucking subtlety. Everyone has to snark, everything has to explode, everywhere there's a lens flare. W/e, Abrams...

I'm meh, because I think they lost a great opportunity. They fell in the trap of having her be sort of untouchable and unflappable, when they could have had her reasonably being pissed off, amused, excited, and any number of human emotions. You can laugh while saying "oh, god, hell no" to the guy who just had a bar fight to impress you. You can grin and jump when you get the opportunity to serve where you like. Any number of things which makes people say "yeah, I've been there" when they watch her. Instead they understated her to death.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sick of fandom's hatred toward women, period. And then the same people who hate pretty much every female character that happens to mar their man-filled fandoms turn right around and try to act like it's the writers who are misogynist, not them. It's so predictible and annoying.

But then I've never understood why fandom is so excited to hate on people anyway. It's almost like y'all think the harder you hate, the cooler you are. But nothing could be further from the truth. It just makes everyone look pathetic.
