It's not that big of a radically altered timeline though until Vulcan is destroyed. Yes, George Kirk dying greatly affect his son and his upbringing but why the hell the differences in everyone else? They should have established that the others had relatives on the ship too or something. Why the hell would a ship full of humans blowing up affect Spock's growing up and behaviour? No Vulcans died on the ship. It wouldn't. So why the hell was he so angry? Oh, no, the humans blowing up made everyone on Vulcan treat me differently!!! Yeah, i don't think so. I don't buy angry/emotional Spock before the planetary explosion.

Maybe if Uhura had relatives on the ship but we don't know she did. I can't see why it impacted much on her life either. So what's her excuse for being such a judgmental asshole? Sorry, youth isn't really a good excuse. Oh, right, she was mad about Kirk hitting on her at a damned bar, which is where you go to get hit on and drunk. Oh, he's such an asshole. Oh, she's mad about Kirk fucking Gaila (like it is any of her business to begin w/who her roomie is sleeping with. It's Gaila's business. Not hers.). Remember the cut of Kirk using Gaila for the codes was cut from the movie and thus it's not canon. She's a total asshole to him throughout the movie and for the entire time they're in the Academy together too. That's some rage issues she's got to deal with if she's that angry for years about Kirk's hitting on her and sleeping w/Gaila. Also, treating potential coworkers (Kirk) the way she does, is totally and completely unprofessional. Why so snarly, Uhura? Even when I work w/people I hate (and yes, I mean hate due to their gossipy, backstabbing, bullying behavior), I remain polite to their face and complain about them to my non-coworker friends to avoid office drama. It's what grown-ups do.

She's also sleeping w/her teacher, Spock, which is just a big hell NO. That's a big power imbalance that I didn't like to see in the movie. I thought it spoke to how little ethics both Spock and Uhura had that they were- sleeping together. People are always going to wonder if she got her grades/position on the ship b/c of their relationship, no matter if she actually earn them w/o his influence or his being easier on her b/c of it (I don't personally think so but I can see it happening). I wasn't impressed by Spock's grown-up behaviour either. Both of them belonged in remedial social skill classes. Both of them reminded me of jr. high behaviour.

Also, her role is nothing but Spock's girlfriend and support throughout the movie. We barely see her being competent at her job. WTH? TOS Uhura wasn't Spock's girlfriend and actually did things and had manners. Nu!Uhura doesn't.

I'll take TOS Uhura over the Nu one any day.

Hell, watching the movie, I got the impression she DID get her position on the Enterprise because of her relationship with Spock. I mean, she literally walked up to him and said, "No, I'm on the Enterprise," and he pretty much replied with the equivalent of "Yes dear."

I was seriously D: at that, because they had painted Uhura as this amazingly brilliant woman, and yet then they turn around and the only reason they can make for putting her on the Enterprise is to browbeat her lover into switching her? I was not impressed...

I saw it as the complete opposite - she was the person best suited for the position, and Spock hadn't placed her there for fear of appearing to favor her. We already knew that she was an incredibly talented xenolinguist, and she only went on to prove that she was better at that job than the crewmember in place on the bridge of the Enterprise, so why shouldn't she be stationed there? Spock was just covering his ass, and she called him on it.

That's how I read it, too. The reason she wasn't on the Enterprise in the first place was because Spock was worried about conflict of interest.

She earned the Enterprise and because her teacher was sleeping with her, she didn't get it. She didn't demand anything but her due and Spock, like the smart guy he is, knew she was right and he was wrong and agreed with her.

Why the hell would a ship full of humans blowing up affect Spock's growing up and behaviour?

I would say that the difference would be that everyone is aware of the connection between Romulans and Vulcans much, much earlier than in TOS, and the way that they found out probably lent itself to a lot more paranoia and backlash against Vulcans. As the son of the Vulcan ambassador to Earth and being half-human, that would definitely have an impact on Spock and his upbringing. He didn't exactly have an easy time in the first place with his mixed heritage, but the atmosphere following Nero's attack on the Kelvin probably amplified that. I'd also say that the change in tech and the ripple effects of the Kelvin tragedy could have affected policy and changed the world overall, which could explain changes in the lives of the other character. Overall, it just feels like a harsher world than TOS.

However... they don't really do a lot to establish that in the movie, and they cut out some scenes that fleshed things out/explained things a bit better that were in the original script. So, yeah, I can totally understand people's gripes with the character changes between TOS and Reboot.

Your entire second paragraph shows a deep misunderstanding of how they set up the character of Kirk. They showed a pattern of behavior which was annoying to Uhura, and they clearly implied that he continued this pattern of behavior. They shouldn't have to show every single thing that was annoying to Uhura when they've already set up their dynamics. I prefer movies don't lead me around by the nose or hold my hand, thanks.

I think you're being facetious about complaining about to your friends about your co-workers as an adult action, but I'd rather know people don't like or trust me to my face. I feel that's more adult.
