People are always going to wonder if she got her grades/position on the ship b/c of their relationship

Hell, watching the movie, I got the impression she DID get her position on the Enterprise because of her relationship with Spock. I mean, she literally walked up to him and said, "No, I'm on the Enterprise," and he pretty much replied with the equivalent of "Yes dear."

I was seriously D: at that, because they had painted Uhura as this amazingly brilliant woman, and yet then they turn around and the only reason they can make for putting her on the Enterprise is to browbeat her lover into switching her? I was not impressed...

I saw it as the complete opposite - she was the person best suited for the position, and Spock hadn't placed her there for fear of appearing to favor her. We already knew that she was an incredibly talented xenolinguist, and she only went on to prove that she was better at that job than the crewmember in place on the bridge of the Enterprise, so why shouldn't she be stationed there? Spock was just covering his ass, and she called him on it.

That's how I read it, too. The reason she wasn't on the Enterprise in the first place was because Spock was worried about conflict of interest.

She earned the Enterprise and because her teacher was sleeping with her, she didn't get it. She didn't demand anything but her due and Spock, like the smart guy he is, knew she was right and he was wrong and agreed with her.
