I just wish that they had done more than stick her in the role of "love interest."
After that little fact got revealed everything she did involved Spock in some way. Comforting Spock, kissing Spock goodbye (oh, and how the hell would a Vulcan (even a half-Vulcan) be okay with opening macking with someone in public like that?).

Why did she have to be put in that role? Why did there HAVE to be a love interest, other than to make Kirk/Spock a little less gay?

I LOVED TOS Uhura. And while I don't hate New Uhura, I'm disappointed with how they used her.

I like nu!Uhura, but I totally agree that the love interest plot line was very "wut" inducing. I actually wouldn't even have minded them being together if it had a bit less out of left-field and if Uhura had gotten more of a chance to shine as a character in her own right. The only reasons it seemed to be included were for shock value/a few quick punchlines and to establish that Spock ~had emotions~. It seemed... really unnecessary. (And this is coming from someone who loved the movie overall.)

Besides, everyone knows if Uhura is going to end up with someone from the ship it's Scotty.

No kidding. I wasn't sold on it at first but graphics convinced me that I want to see Uhura and Scotty together in XII (or XIII or whatever).

Exactly. I would have been fine with it, but it came out of nowhere and basically made her feel like a prop to me.

It's not always about the white guys though. Do you realize what an impact it was that a WOMAN OF COLOR was the love interest in a sci-fi movie such as this? Don't be so naive to the racism that still exists in hollywood. White women can afford to be more picky about their roles because at least they have somewhat more variety. You cannot say the same for women of color and it's disingenuous to pretend it's the same.

I wish I still had the link to an essay that explains this better but for black females, being "the love interest" is a a step-up and comparatively rare in non-niche films. In the totem pole of attractiveness according to Western society, we are at the bottom. Sure, there is a level of sexual attractiveness attributed to us but viewing us as a beautiful female to be cherished/respected? Not so much. Add to that the fact that a woman's value is still by and large tied to their attractiveness and you understand the mindset behind why they don't cast us in those roles very often or at all. So to have a black chick as a "love interest", aka a valued female who's attractiveness is acknowledged,in a mainstream film is pleasing.
Plus, Uhara was shown to be exceptionally smart, caring, and to have a personality, making her IMO to be a character rather than just "a love interest".
