I dislike some aspects of her. I think she really lost me with the 'dumb hick/farm animals' line. I don't care how big an ass someone is being, I can't imagine Nyota Uhura ever being that casually vicious about people. It's never been something I associated with her and it really turned me off.

Yeah, I mostly like Nu!Uhura and am glad she had a larger role, but that line bugged me for exactly the reason you state. TOS Uhura just wouldn't say that and unlike Kirk there's no reason for her to be so significantly different from her Prime counterpart.

NAYRT - I had a hard time reconciling alot of the more minor chars with their TOS counterparts.
And I really disliked that line, too.

I liked the movie as a whole and have no problem with creating a separate timeline in theory, but Nero doesn't really change events for any of the characters except Kirk until Vulcan gets destroyed, so all the others should have been TOS-compatible, albeit ideally better fleshed out and without some of the cringeworthy 60's mores and Doylist character limitations (ie Uhura can't have a romance because OMG she's black and the advertisers are too afraid!).

If we ever have an Abramsverse reboot of, say, TNG there's a lot more room for character divergence because the events of the movie mean that history is going to take a radically different shape.

I'd argue that there actually were a lot of changes to the overall 'verse that could have possibly influenced the other characters and explained the differences (everyone already knows Romulans look like Vulcans, some hostility towards Vulcans because they look like Romulans, improved tech, likely a lot more wariness overall with people having no idea when/if Nero is going to pop back up), but they didn't really do a great job establishing that in the movie. I'm also willing to cut the characters some slack since they're considerably younger in this than they were in TOS. But I can understand why the differences turned a lot of people off, though. Hopefully the new movie will give us more world building along with character development.

An Abramverse reboot of TNG would be really interesting. I'd love to see the trickle down effect that this timeline would have on all of those characters. Now I'm wondering if anyone's written fic of this yet...

NGL, an Abramsverse TNG series helmed by a good showrunner is secretly what I'm hoping the next Star Trek television series will be. Well, I most want a post-DS9 show focusing on the aftermath of the Dominion War, but I understand why that will never happen. I'm not really in the Nu!Trek fandom so I have no idea, but if the fic doesn't exist it really should.

And you do make a good point. Like you said, I don't think the concept was executed very well in that movie, but I do need to factor in just how much the movie had to accomplish in a limited running time while also appealing to a general audience that doesn't care about any of this.

Oh man, that would be amazing. And a really interesting way to tie Reboot in with the current TV timeline and maybe give that side of the franchise a bit of the kick it needs. I actually read something a few weeks back about a possible new TV series in the works, but apparently the creator was planning on following the already established timeline and not delving into Reboot territory. I can't really remember much about the premise beyond that, except that it sounded interesting. I guess we'll see if it comes to fruition!

Yeah, it would have been awesome to get a bit more background within the movie, but they did have time constraints working against them. I actually haven't read the movie novelization myself, but I think it fleshes things out a bit more? Hopefully they'll do a bit more on screen in the next movie. I guess it probably is a fine line to walk between losing people who aren't familiar with Trek canon and pissing off/disappointing the people who are, though.

I actually cut her a lot of slack about that line because Krik was being too pushy. She clearly didn't want to talk to him and she started off firm, but not vicious, but then he kept talking to her. So for her to escalate to get him to stop bothering her is totally fine with me. The audience knows that Krik's an overall good guy, but she doesn't. He's just some guy at a bar and for all she knows he's a violent creep. Given her age it makes even more sense, she hasn't had the opportunity to learn poise in stressful situations.

I just didn't like the "dumb hick" bit because it carries the sentiment "people who live in the country are lesser than city people". I grew up in a big city but that still makes me recoil.
