(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)There are definitely some people who are misogynistic in their Uhura hate (and some of the more vocal ones hate her for breaking up their OTP or taking attention away from Kirk/Spock/McCoy), but not everyone who was displeased with her taking on the role of girlfriend is misogynistic or even dislike her as a character. A lot of people were pissed about it because it seemed like it reduced her to being the love interest rather than a character in her own right, or they just thought it was unnecessary. I don't hate the Spock/Uhura relationship as it was portrayed in the movie, but it did seemed a bit tacked-on to the plot.

I agree, but I wasn't displeased with it per say. I do hope that the next movie expands her role further than "love interest" though.

People should call themselves as they like. Especially since black North Americans are generally the same type of mix as black Hispanics/South Americans: Afro,Euro & Indo. In fact if you think about it black should really just mean mixed since most people traditionally thought of as black are mixed.

Generally the same type of mixed? This surprises and interests me actually. Do you have any links to studies of this? Many genetic studies in DR have shown that most of the Dominicans who participated were on average practically 40-60% African/European (including the darker and lighter skinned people). Only a minority of the people have more exclusive European or African genetics (near the borders or cities where mostly Europeans/Africans stayed). PR is about the same except the majority are more European.
Tbh I find what you're saying a bit hard to believe, That the majority of black north Americans have the same genetic makeup as Caribbean/South American black Hispanics. The ethnicity of the peoples involved are different with the common similarity being African ancestry from slaves. According to one study, the European ancestry in Dominican Republic is apparently more likely to be Semitic also, which greatly surprised me. South Americans are a lot more likely to have Amerindian ancestry than Caribbeans, also.
I do believe that there are places where black north American families are more likely to be racially mixed, but not quite the amount and to the extent that black hispanics/latinos can be and not the same ethnic makeup (other than African).
Who knows though. More studies would be interesting.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)I doubt my family's black genetic makeup is anywhere near the same as my "black Hispanic" Dominican friends.
One for example, has dark skin and thick curly hair. I've seen the rest of her family and its a grab bag and a half of genetics. Her little sister has tan skin and straight, wavy hair. Her father has dark skin, hazel eyes, and thick hair. Her mother has olive skin, straight hair, dark brown eyes and her grandfather has dark skin and green eyes. I've met people in her family who look like they can be part of mine and others who look like they're of European or Indian descent. Dominicans are mostly mixed race through and through and it's been that way for hundreds of years. Just sayin'.
