Yeah, really. I was one of those underprivileged kids who relied on the charity of random people when it came to Christmas gifts (especially after my mom died), and that secret reminded me so much of the people who would get what they thought we needed (one year I got pencils) instead of what we wanted. Someone passing on what the enjoyed as a child was always appreciated more than some asshole going "well those poor kids have things they NEED- let's get them school supplies and socks and shit!" (Yes, that secret from December brought up a lot of feelings, can you tell?)

And I'm a grown-ass woman now and I'd LOVE to get Kermit.

That's terrible! I think that stems from this idea that there aren't other organizations that work to get the basics to the kids, which there are (at least in urban areas). I once volunteered stocking a warehouse full of school supplies that went to public schools in lower income brackets, and yeah, pencils seem like a douche-y gift. Ignoring the request in general is awful, but that's pretty low (and cruelly cheap of that person). I know that at my church, right after Thanksgiving, kids would bring in toys to give away, and I usually gave something that I would have wanted. If the giver wouldn't want to unwrap it, why would they give it? That seems like a pretty good rule of thumb.

That's the power of Kermit: he's comforting and affirming no matter how old you are.
