That's terrible! I think that stems from this idea that there aren't other organizations that work to get the basics to the kids, which there are (at least in urban areas). I once volunteered stocking a warehouse full of school supplies that went to public schools in lower income brackets, and yeah, pencils seem like a douche-y gift. Ignoring the request in general is awful, but that's pretty low (and cruelly cheap of that person). I know that at my church, right after Thanksgiving, kids would bring in toys to give away, and I usually gave something that I would have wanted. If the giver wouldn't want to unwrap it, why would they give it? That seems like a pretty good rule of thumb.

That's the power of Kermit: he's comforting and affirming no matter how old you are.
