I kinda disagree with everyone else on this thread. There's a difference between simply not understanding something, and not understanding something and forging ahead anyway. The latter is in fact something you can change and is akin to arrogance for me. That's my problem with characters like Mater. They either 1) don't get that they're ignorant and/or 2) don't care and try to do things they're incapable of without asking for help or understanding. That's not okay.

I'm gonna agree with you. Mater screwed up and he should have apologized, but instead we were supposed to see Lightning as the bad guy for being upset with Mater for being incompetent.

OP -

This is exactly what I meant when I described him as "simple and ignorant." I loved him in the first movie. I thought he was sweet, but I found him obnoxious and unwilling to understand Lightning's position in the second movie.
