Unpopular opinion here, but I don't believe you can judge fairly racially monolithic nation-states by the racism bar of America (or any other fairly mixed country). That doesn't make racism okay, but people are a product of their culture. Most Koreans have probably never even met a black person - it's a whole 'nother level of ignorance compared to your average American. I mean, it's like having a racist grandma - she grew up in another time, so you cut her more slack when she says awful things.

I'd also hesitate to paint all of Korea under a broad brush. Individuals are quite varied, and some will always be more open-minded than others. The industry can be racist without every individual in it being racist. A friend of mine who is black is quite popular among Korean exchange students/travelers and such because she's studying Korean - you have no idea how far that will go into making Koreans like you. :P
