And sadly you'll probably be right. Kpop bums me out those days with the racism, mysoginy and overall bullshit. And like you op, it depresses me because I do like the music too :/.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like K-pop, but J-pop is awesome. :3

/random comment is random.

That it is! (about JPop)

But while they're not at bad as K-pop with the overt racism, they're still pretty racist.

Be a fan of the music and ignore the rest?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
WOAH SCREAMING TEXT!

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-03-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
no offense but....so? as if american music is kind to other cultures. what does it matter if they 'like' you or not? newsflash, they will most likely never meet you, so you're free to enjoy their music as much as you want in the comfort of your obscurity. and give me a break, not all koreans are judgmental racist jerks like you're making them out to be.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
For some people it's hard to take the blackface and blatant racism. Most people, I'd hope. When idols go on TV shows in blackface and everyone cheers? Yeah, kind of hard to enjoy that.

as if american music is kind to other cultures.

Ahem, there's a wee bit of a difference between maybe not "being kind" and the kind of all-out WTF-ery racist bullshit that K-pop's been putting out.

this would probably be a really good read for you imo.

If it makes you feel any better, I've seen lots of black girls at the kpop shows I've been to in the States. If you're only in it for the music, just enjoy the music and the eye-candy. You'll probably never meet any of the idols in person anyway. Still, I can understand that it would be hard to see them do that blackface shit. On variety shows, I doubt that the idols have any say in it, but it doesn't make it any less awful.

If you do get into kpop, I'd recommending not getting into the fandom side of things so much. It'll drive you insane.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
If you haven't seen this already, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
OKAY.... I dont get this at all.

Do the personal opinions of these singers really have anything to do with enjoying the music?

Do you have to validate you too so the music sounds good?

Im genuinely curious here.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
i don't know about the op, but i personally have a harder time enjoying, let alone actually financially supporting, the work of notorious pedophiles/rapists/spouse abusers/racists.

everyone draws their lines in the sand at different points, these four are my personal big nonos, be they gifted entertainers, politicians or dentists.

So, I'm gonna assume that vile bands like Screwdriver are cool with you. After all, as long as you like the music, all that other stuff can just be ignored, right? And it doesn't say anything negative about their fans, right?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I just assume celebrities wouldn't be interested in me because I'm unremarkable and ordinary and have no shared talent to connect with them with.

But you know, the great thing about imagination is you don't have to let all that boring realism spoil it. It's your daydream -- you rule. Don't let your inner naysayer of yourself talk you out of a happy, harmless fantasy.

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but there's "wouldn't be interested in" and "actively disrespects my demographic." I mean, I'm white, so I can't comment on how it feels to be a Black person and see a band in blackface, but as a female, if I knew a singer was actively misogynistic, liking him would just be difficult. If you know someone would think badly of you because of some kind of -ism on their part, I think it would be a bit of a buzzkill.

I don't know if it helps, but remember that a good number of idols are really at the mercy of their producers and don't have too much say in what they have to do. So perhaps you can imagine that the idols themselves are nice, though there's a lot of stupidity, racism, and whatnot going on in the upper echelons...?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even get why people say 'kpop is racist!!'. It's not as if kpop is the breeding ground/drain hole for racism in Korea, or Southeast Asia. The racist stuff that happens in it is just a spillover of Southeast Asian culture.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
So, that means it's OK and should be tolerated?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
):

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Unpopular opinion here, but I don't believe you can judge fairly racially monolithic nation-states by the racism bar of America (or any other fairly mixed country). That doesn't make racism okay, but people are a product of their culture. Most Koreans have probably never even met a black person - it's a whole 'nother level of ignorance compared to your average American. I mean, it's like having a racist grandma - she grew up in another time, so you cut her more slack when she says awful things.

I'd also hesitate to paint all of Korea under a broad brush. Individuals are quite varied, and some will always be more open-minded than others. The industry can be racist without every individual in it being racist. A friend of mine who is black is quite popular among Korean exchange students/travelers and such because she's studying Korean - you have no idea how far that will go into making Koreans like you. :P

I don't know about other bands, but the one I like isn't racist. I know that's such a typical kpop fan thing to say - "my oppa is nice!" - he is though, lol. He flirted with a black chick in their MV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=044f9C9LBlE#t=0m47s) and he's holding hands with the back-up dancers at at 1:47 (http://vimeo.com/30221620)

I know that's not a huge deal or anything but I guess I'm trying to say not all Koreans are racist? The ones I'm friends with IRL aren't but they did warn me that some are.

But I just realised the examples I gave were from jpop OTL though the band is kpop.

All the racism apologism going on in this thread is harshing my buzz. It's amazing that this group will tear people entirely new assholes for minor offenses, but outright nasty ignorance and racism is totally cool because it's "part of their culture".
Wow.
Anti-semitism was part of German culture, slavery was part of American culture, female circumcision is part of some Muslim cultures. If something is wrong, it is wrong. It doesn't get a cultural pass. If you support it monetarily by buying their music, you are complicit in legitimatizing and spreading that message. You don't get to change the rules to make yourself feel better just because you find their ditties to be catchy.
