Aside from this secret being hard to read (coloooooooors), I agree with you on the adorable that is Xander/Anya OP... And that there is a lack of them in fandom. :( ~~Their unhappily neve after was kind of a more screwed up early Wash/Zoe for Joss now that I think about it.~~

LOL, Wash is sort of like Xander only without the things I didn't like about Xander. I swear, killing him off was Joss making a cliche out of himself.

Ach! Been such a long time but this pairing was one of the reasons I stopped watching the show (along with Reilly and Oz.) I liked it much better in the earlier seasons when it was Buffy and Angel/Angelus, a Xander who had a crush on Buffy, and a Willow who had a crush on Xander. I was so sure Xander and Willow would eventually end up together and when it didn't happen I lost my love for the show. :(

So, you basically missed out on the best seasons of the show (3 and 5) because you only cared about shipping a high school crush that, shockers! didn't turn out to be endgame. Good job there.

Xander and Anya! ♥♥♥ Agreed on all counts. They were my favorite favorite favorite pairing on the show and I'm still devastated that they never got their happy ending (though, on a semi-related note, I do like Dawn/Xander in the comics).

And there have been a couple kinkmemes in the past! Pretty sure there's a tag on AO3 for one of them if you look around. Not very many Xander/Anya works, if I remember correctly, though.

Probably because Xander Harris is the worst.

Ok, not really.

But as a character he really pushes a lot of my hate buttons, so I can't stand him. Meanwhile, I love Anya, so I just couldn't get behind their relationship.

He's too Nice Guy for me. Ugh, he made me hate him so much the way he made Buffy feel bad for being in love (Angel) and for not being in love (Riley) and for never dating him.

He was annoying as fuck (but pretty realistic as a teenage boy) in seasons 1 through 3.5 and I hated him a lot too during that period. But then he started turning around, with episodes like "The Zeppo" and such, and he became a really good character in his own right in seasons 4-6. Then of course he got crapped on in season 7, but everyone got crapped on in season 7 so it wasn't really a Xander-specific derailment, but here I am ranting again....

Xander is pretty awful throughout seasons 1- 3. He is a total Nice Guy and says a lot of shitty stuff that the show doesn't call him on. And I think that's what pisses me off the most. The show wants us to sympathize with him and never presents his attitude and actions as wrong. I think Xander's best season is season 4. He's alright in season 5 too. But... season 6. No. Not only with the leaving Anya at the altar BS and then thinking he can police her future relationships (fuck off Xander, you don't own Anya and she can fuck Spike if she wants), but also with him telling Dawn about Spike's attempted rape of Buffy. NO. YOU DO NOT GET TO DO THAT, XANDER HARRIS. That is Buffy's information to share to or not share with whom she chooses.

I don't disagree with your "Xander sucks" thesis (though I am a fan of his in S4-5), but there isn't really a shortage of Xander slash, so I'm not convinced a lack of popularity accounts for the scarcity of fic for his canon ships.

I can't stand Xander either. But the few times I did like him was when he was with her. I think he was a better person around her, and I think they made a good couple. I still hate him and yet I love the couple. Not sure how that works, but whatever.

I liked Xander/Anya a lot although they aren't really a ship of mine. They often appear as a secondary ship in fic primarily about other pairings so I suppose for someone like me I get my fill of them that way.

I think perhaps there aren't that many Xander/Anya fic etc because there's quite a bit of animosity towards Xander around fandom and quite a few people who really like Anya seem to feel as if she's better off without him. Also a lot of Xander fans seem to write slash (which obv. wouldn't include Xanya!)

And yeah, Anya/Xander is awesome... though I probably wouldn't read a fic about them unless the fic was, like, brilliant.

Watching Criminal Minds, I found myself judging the guy who plays Garcia's boy friend as unworthy of her because of Xander's actions. And I still call him Xander...yeah. I haven't gotten over having that ship crushed.

For me, all I can see when I see Kevin on screen is the rapist guy from Private Practice. It is really disconcerting.

I love Anya. But I can't stand Xander most of the time.

Xander/Anya were my favorite couple in Buffy and Joss screwing them over was pretty much the cue for me to say "okay, done giving a shit about this show". Not because Xander/Anya was that important to me, just because they were pretty much one of the only things left in season 6 that could stop the idea of everyone in Sunnydale just dancing themselves to death from being a pretty good way to put a swift end to everyone's misery. They kind of represented...I dunno, the things in the world that made all the misery and torture and drama and death and fighting worthwhile. So their screwing over meant that the only motivation to fight was some second-hand theoretical knowledge about things like family and peace and fulfilling lives, which only happened to other people offscreen.

I love Xander/Anya as a pairing, but only if I pretend S6 didn't happen. If it did, I'm Ganya all the way.

I loved Xander/Anya. Don't really get the Xander hate though. Everyone in Buffy does shitty things, that's kind of why I love it, there are no one without mistakes and serious character flaws. As for Joss screwing them over with the wedding thing, he sure did, although I think the worst offence was actually Anya as a stand alone character.

In S7 she was turned into a bitter, spiteful and clingy pale shadow of what she used to be. I loved 'Selfless', but I fail to see the point of it when they rendered the ending conclusion of Anya in need of finding herself by just have her be even more obsessed by Xander than she was before. Why didn't she get to date and find new things she was good at or whatever?

It's things like this that makes me side eye Joss so hard, and also one of the reasons why he's not as much of a feminist as he thinks he is.

I think it is that Xander is the typical nice guy and that he's never called on it. Buffy acts like it was this amazing thing that he didn't rape her when she was under the love spell even though he did what any decent human being would do and was the cause of the spell in the first place. And even though a love spell is pretty damn sketchy anyway and that gets glossed over. And his double standard of trying to get involved in all Buffy's relationships as if he had the right, not telling her Angel was getting his soul back, blaming her for not being in love with Riley, and then getting mad at her for going to do her job and kill Anya (who had done far more bad things than Angelus ever did).

Basically, Xander hits many of my pet peeves. But if it was acknowledged that his actions were not okay, I'd be less bothered. But we are supposed to think of him as the nice, normal, protective friend rather than the sexist jerk who thinks he can or should control a slayer and a powerful witch just because they are female and he is male.

I agree with you about season 7 Anya. I do like season 7, but Anya's characterization and storyline was one of the things that annoyed me. And yes, Whedon is awesome and does try. But he's still a man, and he's not as much of a feminist as he thinks he is.
