The icon is meant to be ironic. I logged into my sock account just for it.

And whatever, butthurt kid. You tell people IRL you're a full blown adult and you're still fanning over cartoons and you'll get some serious side-eyeing. Except in certain circles. It's not usual, and there's a reason for it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Right, because what's "usual" (and I would totally argue your assessment of the word) is always right and everyone should stay well within the boundaries of what's deemed so.

[identity profile] frenchonionchef.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Fact is, you're a fucking weirdo to most people if you're an adult who fangirl/fanboys over cartoons. Either own it or don't.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
really because

in a lot of cultures

this isn't even slightly true

like just shut up

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
People don't think other people are weird for liking any cartoon whatsoever. I'll concede that there are some cartoons that will make people think you're a weirdo, but it's not all cartoons everywhere.

People look at you funny for fangirling/fanboying. Even then only if you're disturbing them about it. If you quietly fangirl/fanboy in your own home, no one gives a shit!

Additionally, depending on where the cartoon was produce it may have been originally intended for adults! Not every country shares the idea that animation is for children only!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
People look at you funny for anything. Hell, people in real life look at me funny for being on Livejournal. To them most 'normal' people don't go around chatting with random people about fandoms and things on the internet. Everyone has a weird quirk. I mean, you have a sock account, I bet people in real life would be side-eyeying you pretty hard.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was only you that acted like a fucking weirdo when you were a fangirl/boy?

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I would think it's the fangirling part, not what you like so much. Nobody in the real world I know gives two flips that I can watch The Simpsons or Family Guy on Sunday night - since some of them do, too - but if they found out I write fanfic about Red Dwarf and POTC, which aren't animated, they'd probably think I'm a fucking weirdo. Which, I am, but probably not for the reasons they'd think I am. ;-)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Being ~ironic~ at 27

How very adult of you.

Enjoy the rest of your mature life as a humorless tool!

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh right, well, I guess I just forgot to turn in my imagination when I turned 18. Luckily my college and professional peers didn't either and I can have serious adult conversations about which animated shows are good and bad.

Also, again, the Academy of Motion Pictures have validated animation several times through nominations for best picture. In addition, there are many quality movies that are animated. Why does the medium make it 'lesser'? Shouldn't a good movie be praised and talked about whether animated or not?

If anything the fannish behavior will get you side-eyed, not the medium. But then again, you're on F!S so...

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience, some people will side-eye you if you fan hardcore about anything. It's not limited to cartoons.

And, ike you, most of my friends and professional peers are actually adult enough to admit when they do enjoy cartoons. Most people get over the whole "OMG CARTOONS ARE FOR BABIES" mindset while they're still teenagers.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
That was my point - it was fanning out, not fanning out on something that happened to be a cartoon that will get you strange looks.

Apparently [livejournal.com profile] frenchonionchef is just a little behind the maturity curve and can't admit that something "aimed" at a younger demographic can be good on its own merits.

Yeah. It seems like the only cool thing to do is to never be passionate about anything.

celestinenox: (Disney - Stitch)

[personal profile] celestinenox 2012-03-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
The reason being that some people take themselves too seriously? :D

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Because the adult thing to do is to make yourself stop enjoying what the hell you like in order to conform with the tastes of some group of strangers.

Over here people love soap operas and local dramas. I dislike them. But I must ~be an adult~ and quit watching what makes ME feel good and force myself to like what makes OTHERS feel good.

Unless by adult you mean cowardly.

[identity profile] frenchonionchef.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
lol. Irony is when an anon accuses another of cowardness.

Keep trying, butthurt kid.

The reason I hit a nerve is perfectly clear. You know what I'm saying is true and it hurts. I would say sorry, but I'm not. Peace.

Hey. Hey, here's a secret. Making people annoyed with you doesn't necessarily mean you're right. Might just mean you're an asshole.

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
We're telling you we think you're wrong, so we must secretly think you're right? Ha! Worst flounce ever!

Also, no one here is acting any more defensive about this thread then anyone else is acting about any other thread on this site, so I don't know why you think you "hit a nerve".

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Actually it's sad to see such a kind of aggressive self-loathing. But taking it onto others is not very mature.

-a five years older than you kid

(Anonymous) 2012-03-17 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
...What? Most people I've run across, outside of fandom, as long as you just mention in passing that you like something that's animated, they tend to not bat an eye. It's when you start actually fangirling/boying it hard that the side eyeing starts.
