Not that I'm dismissing the need for research (because it makes art and stories so much better) but seriously, unless the work in question is a scholarly work about the time period in question, one should never take an author/artist's presentation as cold hard fact. It's called 'artistic license' for a reason.

And actually, even then you shouldn't take one person's word and research as the be-all, end-all of the subject in question. Oy, children today.
