I ship Ben/Leslie because they're adorable together. Hotness has nothing to do with it.

This.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
...or, it could be that you're mistaken and plenty of people ship for reasons beyond "teh hot."

excuse you ben is a sexy hummingbird elf king.

Not in the fandom, but are you actually complaining that people ship for reasons other than hotness? That doesn't even make any sense.

(Also that guy looks pretty hot to me and she looks very cute too.)

I don't necessarily think that people are all about TEH HOTTNESS with this couple, same as they weren't with Jim & Pam before them because, honestly, that's basically what this relationship is trying to be in some ways-- all the tension-y caught-on-camera glances and build up, anyway. Less so now that they're together. They're just adorable, not super sexy, and everyone was rooting for them.

Adam Scott is cute as hell if you ask me. Regardless though, they're relationship is honestly just adorable and seemingly genuine. I ship them in the same way I would root for a cute couple I knew in real life. You just root for them.

Then again, I've never been one to ship for "hotness". I've always invested in the emotional connection of a relationship, and whether it's something I would want in my life. It's probably why I almost always end up shipping canon couples and never fanon--because I can't bother to make up scenarios about relationships that aren't actually being developed by authors/writers. When the author/writer isn't doing a convincing enough job to make me emotionally invested, then I don't find myself caring about their couple.

.....you've been reading the kinkmeme haven't you?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What is with all the "ppl only ship the hot characters" conversations lately? Is it just me, or have there been a lot of them in the past week or so?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
idk, it's not really the first popular pairing where one or both of the people aren't super hot. Lily/Snape is pretty popular even though Snape isn't really all that attractive (of course, I guess most people picture Rickman!Snape rather than book!snape. but even then, Alan Rickman has never seemed to be conventionally attractive)

and there's Mckay/Sheppard. Rodney also isn't what most would consider handsome in a conventional way (though a lot of fans do find him sexy).

and there are plenty of Deadpool/Cable fans even though Deadpool has like, a whole mess of tumors or whatever.

tbh I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but maybe there are either some fans who ship the pairing in your secret who aren't shallow, or there are fans who for whatever reason finds those characters to be super hot. you know, personal tastes and all that

[identity profile] htebazytook.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
. . . . Two hot ppl with no chemistry amounts to nothing, basically. It's the actual interaction they have with each other that makes it worth shipping

i'm just speaking generally really

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
A) Adam Scott is super hot.

B) Plenty of people don't just ship for teh hot. So, sorry.

[identity profile] vertigomac.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, OP, most people I know ship character first. //shrug//

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
...Really, tho? That's why people ship things? I very much hope the majority of people aren't that shallow; that just defeats the purpose of fandom to me.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't consider them ugly, but I'm having a hard time trying to remember the cast of anything ever not being at least conventionally attractive.

Or having an interesting face. Or fascinatingly ugly.

Echoing everyone else saying ships usually involve chemistry. Unless the characters are basically two-bit blank slates, in which case why not ship the pretty.

I felt this way about all the Garrus/Femshep shipping in the Mass Effect fandom. I was so sure the more aesthetically conventional alien would be the one getting the love, but nope, people really do prefer Garrus's sense of humor to Thane's distinct lack of scars and mandibles. Personality wins out sometimes! Whoda thunk.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen the chemistry between them, but I freely admit that it's probably because he seems younger than she is (and I don't even know the actors' respective ages, that's just the impression I get), and I've always had a weird mental block about pairings like that.

[identity profile] amarielah.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
The hotness of the characters I ship is almost always incidental. Personality and chemistry is where my real interest lies. It's like...I don't personally find women sexually attractive, but I still ship a lot of femslash because the relationship dynamics are hot. And I can't bring myself to be involved with a ship that involves two hot people who I don't think would have any chemistry.

Not that there's anything wrong with people shipping for the hotness, because there really isn't. It's just not the physical hotness that necessarily does it for me. So...yeah.

This secret really kind of baffled me. I wonder if the OP is asking this question sincerely, or if they are just don’t like the couple and are making a snide comment on their attractiveness. Anyway, giving the OP the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they want to discuss the issue, here is my take on it. In my opinion, most people ship characters that are attractive because most actors and actresses are attractive, at least in some sense (interesting looking, striking, charismatic, etc.), and it’s pretty much as simple as that.

But as I said, the line of thinking that the OP seems to be implying that fans ship two people together because they…want to have sex with both parties in the couple? Or just want to see them have sex together? I mean I guess that makes a certain amount of sense, sorta. I’m a big slash fan, so maybe that argument holds up somewhat for me, anway?) But when I think of all of the het pairs that I ship, it has so much to do with their story and their chemistry, etc, like most people here are saying. For example, one of my biggest het ships is Caroline / Tyler from the Vampire Diaries. I’m a hetero lady, and I realize that Tyler is conventionally attractive, but he doesn’t really do it for me. Caroline is beautiful, but even if I were gonna swing that way for a woman on tVD, it would totally be Bonnie (I’m just sayin, she is gorgeous). Anyway, I love them together because she was completely there for him when he needed her, and helped him to be a better person, and he realizes how amazing she is and worships her for it. I love how at the beginning of the show she was so sad because no guys loved her, and as the show went on she became such a strong person who was worthy of love, and now men totally see that.

Another example, I shipped Dexter / Rita (from DEXTER) so hard, because they were both so vulnerable and they found each other and he worked so hard to get to a place where he could be intimate with her, and he gave her the support she needed to get stronger, and she helped him by kicking his ass when he was being shitty because he didn’t understand human interaction well (and then the writers killed her and wrote the worst season of pretty much any show ever staring Colin Hanks as a block of wood, but that’s neither here nor there). And MCH is hot and I would totally hit that and Julie Benz is beautiful, but that’s kind of just the cherry on top, you know?

Finally one slash example: I ship Dean /Castiel (Supernatural) because they obviously have such intense feelings for each other, and they help each other, and just...hang out and be adorable all day long and have eyesex ALL THE TIME and both actors *are* in fact really really ridiculously good looking…but honestly if I could watch two actors make out it would be Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, but I don’t really ship the characters.

Not familiar with this fandom, but I think they're both fairly cute.

That being said, hotness does not determine my shipping preferences. Like, ever.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-23 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry idk both these actors are actually pretty mad hot

diff strokes for different folks I mean

I'm not a shipper for this in anyway other than "aw cute on tv". But. Yeeeah...

[identity profile] 100101011.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
i had to think about this for a moment, cause almost all of the pairings i ship are hot lol. but i think the hotness is probably not the primary reason. i like hotness, and it lends itself to chemistry, but it's not 100% necessary.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2012-03-23 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Leslie is smokin', I don't know what you're talking about. Her and Ben are perfect for each other, and he is perfect for a lot of my friends (skinny nerdy boys are their kryptonite). And anyways I don't just want two 'perfect' hot people fucking (there is actual pictoral porn for that if that's what you want], I want some emotional connection, bond, that something that makes the nbc kink meme, /awesome/.

[And she is also smart, and funny, and dedicated, and I would marry her in a second were she of the gay-lady variety].
