God, it's depressing that half the het ships out there are abusive man/much older man/rapist/"bad boy" and nice/young/innocent woman.

It even seems like most canon het pairings have those elements to some extent, even in things that are meant to be much more lighthearted. They guy might not physically abuse the woman, but he'll always be putting her down or teasing her, or just being an arrogant twit, and OF COURSE they'll end up in love/sleeping together/just having SOMETHING happen. People just consider that 'sexual tension.' And if they don't, they'll be the most popular ship among fans.

I can kind of understand people who hate het. SO MUCH of it is about the male character dominating the female. It's so hard to find pairings that don't have any elements of that.

Not that I don't agree with you on general principle about the jerk/innocent pairing...

but S6 Buffy was not an innocent, nice girl. She was severely depressed and abused the crap out of Spike for years, and especially S6. She played on his attraction to him and used him for sex and to escape her own world without any consideration for his feelings and put him down and verbally and physically abused him throughout the whole time.

Not that Spike was a saint, because honestly he's an asshole by nature at this point and gave about as much as he got, but one can't ever call Buffy a nice/innocent woman in regards to their relationship in S6.

I do not make any apologies about the attempted rape, however. But as someone said earlier, Ensouled!Spike =/= Souled!Spike, and there are many essays which put the difference much more eloquently than I can.

Yeah. AR aside (dear god, was that a bad choice, writers) there's actually a lot of interesting gender dynamics going on with S6 Spuffy, in that HE'S the one who is all open about his emotions and ~I love you~, and she's the one who's closed off and using him for sex.

This is possibly OT, but something I've never seen mentioned in my (admittedly not exhaustive experience of) Buffy fandom is that when Buffy dies in S5, her mother has been dead for — what? All of a week, maybe? So when Buffy's resurrected in S6, as far as Buffy is emotionally concerned Joyce has only just died, so of course she's devastated by that as well as the "ripped out of heaven" stuff. Dawn and the rest of the Scooby Gang have had months to grieve and slowly come to terms with the shock of Joyce's sudden death, but Buffy has not (something they seem wholly oblivious to).

I've always thought that was key to Buffy's behaviour in S6: the loss of the only parent who loved her utterly and unconditionally. Given that, small wonder perhaps that Buffy sought to escape into the temporary oblivion of sexual ecstasy, even if it was in a thoroughly destructive way that brutalized both herself and Spike.

Oh, I'm not saying she didn't have good reason for being depressed, or a believable reason for doing what she does.

I'm just saying she's not an innocent in the fiasco that is Buffy/Spike S6. She still did what she did for selfish reasons, even if they are justified.

"Dawn and the rest of the Scooby Gang have had months to grieve and slowly come to terms with the shock of Joyce's sudden death, but Buffy has not (something they seem wholly oblivious to). "

The Scooby Gang being self-centered, oblivious assholes wrt Buffy? Unpossible!

(But seriously, I guess they all get credit for not totally abandoning Buffy, but from what I remember, time and time again they completely failed at having any kind of empathy for her, or it even occurring to them that maybe they should be trying to find some empathy for her, jfc.)

Too true. They throw her out of her own house in s7, when she fails at successfully managing an army of helpless teenage girls.

FYI, "much older man/young woman" is NOT inherently about "the male character dominating the female."

As part IRL of such a pairing, fed up with this assumption being made. There may be many years between us but we are EQUALS, tyvm.
