IA -- I can here for drama, dammit!

What would fans do, other than not read his comics? Pay his share of child support?

Isn't it better to let the authorities know, than a bunch of fans who honestly will not care?

NGL, that icon creeps me out.

[identity profile] anonlulz.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem.

Stereotypes are hard to overcome. :)

I feel like this should be an "omgiknowthem" secret.

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You make me wish there was a community for that kind of secrets.

Well, there's oh no they didn't, of course, but...

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel bad for you OP, this stuff happens all the time and you can't help finding it hard to believe that people like him. So many people are vile to their partners and kids, but have an outside persona of being a nice guy.

Usually it eventually comes out, look at the celebrities who've been eventually outed as violent to their wives or kids. Steve McQueen for example. Not that it stops people admiring their work, but the truth of their character is at least out there.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what did Steve McQueen do?

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2012-03-31 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wikipedia accuses him of nothing worse than possibly doing cocaine and voting republican. That is assuming we're talking about motorcycle-riding-badass Steve McQueen, and not the British director.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as far as I know he gave a crapton to charity and was hated by Nixon.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
You mean like Chris Brown? Oh wait, he just won a Grammy and still has legions of adoring fans. Even when shit does come out, people eventually forget or forgive, so it's almost like it never happened which is sad. I'm aware there are people that still hate him, but if you search him on twitter or tumblr there's still plenty of fans of him (not just his work). Shit like that sucks balls.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry, OP, that must suck. :( At the risk of sounding insensitive, though, I personally think artists/writers/whatever's personal lives should be kept separate from their work. I don't blame you for being angry with him, but even if this comes out, people are probably still going to be fans of his work and there's nothing wrong with that IMO. You should be talking to the authorities, not fandom, because this situation has nothing whatsoever to do with his comic or his fans.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-31 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Outing him out won't make you exactly look very good, either, and he can use it as mean to look like the poor victim who ended with a horrible person like you (people like that are experts on using that to their advantage). It would be more effective if you go with the law to at least force hom to do his duty with your child...

[identity profile] rubykatewriting.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I can't with this mentality. There are genuinely talented people who are terrible, horrible human beings. People should know. It's this way of thinking that has people still shoving accolades all over Chris Brown, Roman Polanski, and assholes of their ilk. Talent does not negate the horrible things they've done. I'd rather go in aware and able to choose to support or not.

And the suggestion of talking to the authorities? You do understand how often they DON'T go after deadbeat dads or the laws in the state of residence are an utter joke? You're not only coming across as insensitive but extremely naive.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is my feeling for so much of this thread.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I don't know much about most celebrities' personal lives and while this is partly due to laziness and not caring, I admit that there is also some active avoidance going on because I don't want anything to spoil my enjoyment of my favorite artists and entertainers. That being said, I appreciate being informed of things like rape and abuse because I do not want to support that in any form. There are things I just can't put aside the way I could maybe a messy divorce, where it's possible nobody actually did anything wrong except get really angry after the split.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry this person is an asshat. I don't think outing him will do much though. Like you said, there will be people in denial and he'll just say it's not true and people will believe that. It happens all the time. I think people would be amazed at how many famous/infamous people are real jerks.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-01 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the same boat as you. I used to know someone who's now kind of a big name in some places I frequent, and I wish I could tell everybody all about some of the legitimately awful things that person has done.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-04-01 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to hear that OP. I don't know what to say but I wish to offer you words of support regardless.

I suppose if I could give any advice at all, it would be that if you chose to say something to the public definitely be specific. Saying "he's a bad father" and things that people brush aside like no child support will make them think you just have a problem with your ex. If you have specific examples of things he did, that would be better. If you have evidence, that would be a million times better, as otherwise he will deny what you say and it will be your word against his.
And people are typically fond of a person they know (or know of) and reticent to start hating that person and their work based on the words of a stranger, so they'll look for an excuse to pin it on you. Unfortunately we live in a culture that encourages abusive behavior by saying "it's not that bad" and "what can you do?" or "you're just looking for attention" and worse when victims speak up. The really sad truth is that by speaking out you will expose yourself to that ugliness, and it hurts terribly. But if you're willing to be vilified by the people who will defend him no matter what, I'd say you should feel free to go public.
