Being from a country where very few males are circumcised I always find it weird when uncircumcised characters in fics are seen as freaks/coming from a family of weirdos by other characters.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And by the same token, circumcision was a lot rarer in America in the earlier 20th century, so if you're going historical, you should keep that in mind.

On the other hand that's surprising to me, that authors get it wrong, because most of the British fandoms I've read tend to make a point of...mentioning uncut status or at least referring to foreskin.

Really, unless your character is Jewish, or lives in modern-day US, there's no reason for him to be circumcised.

Tbh because I personally only have experience with uncut that's what my brain defaults to when reading a scene anyway. I guess what I'm saying is, if a porny scene doesn't mention a foreskin I just assume it's there whereas mentioning a foreskin doesn't throw me out in the way it might someone who is used to the idea of most men being cut. Certainly as an English person I'd be a bit "eh, really?" if a character in a British fandom is mentioned as being cut (when there's no religious or cultural reasons for it) but that's probably because of my personal experience and the fact that when I've asked male friends about this almost all of them are uncut.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
This is incredibly relevant to my fanfic interests considering I write Marauder-era smut. LOL. So thanks for the info.

But I really would rather not dwell on Snape's penis. As far as I'm concerned, he had the anatomy of a Ken doll a la Dogma.

I have to admit to making sure I always mention foreskins being moved up and down when writing sex scenes with a male character (I don't write about Americans) because some of my clueless American reviewers have often told me it "ruins their entire day/the entire fic!", and really, if you're going to be an asshole about perfectly normal human anatomy, I will gladly ruin your delusions. Foreskins for all!

I have to admit, I tend to start giggling when people go into detail about penises in fic generally, but yeah. I actually didn't realise circumcision was particularly common in the US until I started reading fic, so looking things up is good.

Of course, this is probably one of the things people don't think to research because it's not seen as that important when it comes to fic.

My mind defaults to uncut, same as Anon above. I've never heard of this trend, nor I've heard of anyone circumcised for other reasons besides medical or religious. Yeah, people do mention it, because it's outside the norm :P .

Yeah, circumcision is pretty common here in the States. They have the bullshit medical reasons why it's done: it helps lower the rates of contracting HIV (lolwut) or it might get infected (cleaning a dick with foreskin is somehow so hard!), but it's mostly done for money. Plus there's a pretty well-known case where a guy's penis was horribly mutilated during a circumcision when he was infant and his parents were told to raise him as a girl, which never worked out, he never felt like a girl, he found out what happened and lived the rest of his life as a man, and he eventually committed suicide. I, unfortunately, don't remember his name and the asshole who conducted the experiment reported the results of raising the guy as a girl were successful.

I'm pretty sure Snape was born in the 60's, not 70's. HP takes place in the 90's, and Snape would have been his 30's throughout the books.

I personally don't care for the procedure myself and the male characters I do have are uncut.

Unless they're muggle-born or Jewish, why would a wizard have a circumcised penis?

Am I the only one who remembers the Weasleys' horrific reactions to finding out what muggle doctors do to their patients? If a wizard is not okay with surgeries or needle through skin by the way of making stitches, what would make them want to chop off a piece of their penis? I'm pretty sure circumcision is considered a muggle tradition.

(And kinda OT, but I've never understood why Americans insist on circumcised penises. It makes about as much sense as creationists.)

Also, aliens. If you're not going to be creative and give them unique-compared-to-human genitals, why are they always circumcised? WHY IS THIS A UNIVERSAL THING, FANDOM?

Answer: because a lot of fanfiction is written by people who don't have enough experience with penises to know that they come in something other than "huge, throbbing, circumcised man meat."

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I read smut that described the penis as being circumcised or uncircumcised.
Is there a book that goes through the world history of circumcision and penis alterations or something?

Was Snape muggle-born? I was going to say that I doubted Wizards used muggle doctors, but it's been so long since I've read the books that I can't remember if that's actually a valid point. I have no opinion on Snape's penis, so I guess I'll wander away never knowing who wins this debate, oh well.

There are better pros for being uncircumcised anyway, I don't get why people are so hung up on circumcised penises. Cut guys have premature ejaculation easier, their equipment stops working earlier when they get old... Plus, my ex-bf said it's easier to control orgasms if you're uncircumcised (hallelujah for tantric sex). And apparently you're also more sensitive if uncircumcised.

I like uncircumcised better, because it's natural, and I love reading fics that have that. (Circumcised are nicer to look at, but it's still genital mutilation IMO.)

Okay I have a question for OP I guess, what in the fanfics you've been reading states that the dick is cut? I mean, do authors tend to write that straight out, or is there some descriptor you're picking up on?

I'm curious because generally I don't go into that much detail about cut/uncut, or even pubic hair, as I guess I'd rather leave it up to reader interpretation for whatever they prefer. But I was raised in America with all the cultural baggage that comes with, so maybe I'm writing something that is cock-ethnocentric. Just wondering what clued you in that he was cut.
