And by the same token, circumcision was a lot rarer in America in the earlier 20th century, so if you're going historical, you should keep that in mind.

On the other hand that's surprising to me, that authors get it wrong, because most of the British fandoms I've read tend to make a point of...mentioning uncut status or at least referring to foreskin.

Yeah, in the Sherlock fandom, I've read (and written) fanfic where foreskins are mentioned, without any "ew, why are you uncut?" or anything. The guys are just... assumed to be that way.

Strangely, my main fandom at the moment (well, it's been my main fandom for 2 years now) is a British fandom, and obviously has almost exclusively British characters (it's an obscure fandom, not something big like Sherlock or HP or Doctor Who), and yet foreskins are hardly ever mentioned. It really bugs me! So much so that it's become a sort of kink of mine when foreskins actually are mentioned!

I've read dozens, maybe hundreds, of fics in that fandom - mostly slash, since it's a mostly slash fandom - and yet I can probably count the amount of fics that have mentions of foreskin in them on one hand. The fandom is comprised of a lot of upper class characters though, so maybe that's the reason for the assumed lack of foreskin? There actually was a big discussion in the fandom about a year ago about the probable foreskin status of the characters, I can't quite remember how that went though.

Ah, well it's a RPF fandom, and I'm a little reluctant to mention it by name in such a public place since it has a tendency to attract trolls. Which was why I tried to keep it vague when talking about it.

Maybe it's not mentioned because it's considered default. You don't mention when people have hair or nails, only when they don't.

True, but so much attention is paid to genitals in adult slash fic, in a way that isn't to hands, to be comparable to fingernails. It seems odd to not at least mention it briefly whilst talking about the other parts of the genitalia. So many fics have mentions of testicles, the perineum, the head, the slit, and so on, it just makes the foreskin really conspicuous in its absence.

Well, I haven't read those fics, but I would guess the foreskin would be less noticeable because it was retracted. Erection causes foreskins to retract.

And others would know better than me how it was in the U.K., but my lower class, Australian father was circumcised. I think it may have been a catholic thing, I'm not sure.

Although, now that I think about it, pubic hair is hardly ever mentioned either, and I somehow doubt the characters are the type to shave off their pubic hair! So I guess maybe you're right about it not being mentioned because it's just the default.

I'm the anon you were replying to. Yeah, I know some fics go into a lot of detail, so I guess it should be mentioned more, but default for me is uncut and I never thought about mentioning it (when writing) or lack of mention (when reading) unless it's a detailed oral scene. And even then it slips my mind a lot. I guess foreskin is just a fact for people used to it, not something you pay any mind to.
