You did what you did because it was the only option for you at the time.

NO! It was not the only option for them at the time. At the very least they could have not lied even if they didn't want to tell the truth.

How dare you excuse deliberate fraud!

nayrt

They could have not lied even if they didn't want to tell the truth. What do you recommend? "I need money, but I can't say why. Here's my PayPal"?

We don't know OP's situation. You can't say for certain that it was not the only option at the time.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much! Still better than outright lying.

No, there was no reason she had to lie. There is no way to tell me she couldn't have been vague enough to not get grief about it and she had to lie and say it was for her computer.

It's like saying I need money for my computer, then going to spend it on alcohol. It's my right to drink alcohol, it's not my right to expect other people to pay for it, particularly under false pretenses.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
An abortion is not alcohol. A woman's right to have autonomy of her body and not be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term is not the same as a persons right to drink. You know that. You know exactly why that comparison is bullshit. You're just trying to be inflammatory.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, both deal with the person's right to do what they want with their body. Both are legal rights, but potentially controversial.

It's a more apt comparison than you would like, but it fits.

There would be absolutely nothing wrong with that, because it contains no deception. If people then discover the money was used for something they wouldn't have given money for, that's their damn fault.

But people who donate to anything should be able to assume the money will goto the cause they intended to donate to. Once Op decided to fabricate a story, she did something wrong. What she said the money was for and what it was actually used for are irrelevant. If the former and the latter aren't the same thing and you always knew that's how it would go, you are a liar.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you're a cis man, right? You can't get pregnant and will thus never, ever be in the situation the OP was in, of needing an abortion and not having the funds for it and being desperate enough to lie in order to get the funds?

In that case - SHUT THE FUCK UP.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
fwiw, I'm a woman who has had an abortion in the past and I agree with him. It's not cool to deceive your friends like that, even if you do have a good reason

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

If the situation was reversed and the OP said they needed money for an abortion and instead bought computer parts, all these commentors would be hollering about how they're the fandom equivalent of Bernie Madoff.

Interesting, isn't it, how fraud only becomes fraud when "social issues" aren't involved?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Because there's no time frame for buying computer parts? They could have saved up and/or asked and been honest and it wouldn't have been a disaster if they didn't raise enough money right away.

There is a time frame for abortions and you need to get that money in time otherwise it's too late. Not to mention the harassment they most certainly would have received from pro-life people had they been honest.

No one is happy that the OP felt that she needed to lie or that it was a good thing. Some of us just think it might have been a least awful decision.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't give a flying fuck about the woman's abortion, she is a wretched person for lying and conning her friends out of their money for something they might not have agreed with. Pro-life harassment would be a small price to pay for, oh, I don't know, NOT BEING A LYING PIECE OF SHIT.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
to you maybe. and I'm sure the op doesn't give a flying fuck about that. so there.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
your priorities are fucked up. Pro-life harassment can take the form of physical harm and murder and if the OP's RL identity was known to anyone on her flist, that's what she could have been facing.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. Sorry if I care more about my money than some random person's fee-fees.

Your comments, anon, are proving that YOU are a piece of shit and proving to me, and probably some other people, that if we knew you IRL, we'd NEVER ask YOU for any kind of help, especially in matters such as these.

So I'm a piece of shit for protecting what I rightfully earned? What's the weather like in Bizarro World?

And if you knew me IRL, you'd know I'm a very generous person when it comes to people I care about.

Nope, don't buy it! You can pretend that it was all you want, but it doesn't make it true.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Since you clearly know everything about OP's situation, pray tell, what were her other options?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Simply saying that she needs the money urgently without specifying why or saying she's uncomfortable discussing the reasons why. No repercussions, no deceit. Everyone's happy.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
She'd be much less likely to get it, and she'd already be on a time limit.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
People can think that the OP doing a shitty thing was better than having to be pregnant against her will without thinking the thing she did wasn't shitty.

Lesser of two evils and all that shit.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Lesser still "Need some money for a medical procedure." not lying and not committing fraud while getting the money OP needed.
