I haven't watched the show since the season 5 finale but this doesn't surprise me one bit. Almost any new female character the show introduced (back when I watched it) who wasn't already dead (Mary, Jessica) was automatically hated by a chunk of the fandom. (Note that I said 'almost any' and 'chunk'. I'm trying to give people credit here. And I won't speak to what's happened in the last 2 seasons, as I haven't watched them or seen the fandom reaction outside of my flist.)

But I love how the fandom 'loves' all those women now that they're dead. When I actually tried to take part in the fandom during seasons 4 and 5, all I ever heard was how horrible/awful/gross Ruby 2.0 and Anna were and how everyone wished they'd just die already. I don't think EVERYONE in the fandom felt that way but a HUGE number of the VOCAL fans were calling for their deaths and it cracks me up that fandom now supposedly 'loved' them.

Jo always seemed to have her fair share of fans and haters, though the number of her fans seemed to increase after her death. I think Ellen was the one 'not dead since the pilot' exception? I don't really remember anyone out-and-out hating on her the way I'd seen with the others.

Also note: I realize there is a small but devoted section of female character/femslash fans who have always supported these ladies. But as this section always seemed incredibly small, I'm not sure how they fit into the fandom majority or if their opinions were/are ever heard.

Ellen was "old" and would never have fucked either one of the Winchesters. Who were, at the time, the most important people on the show. That's why she didn't get any hate. She was no threat.

I remember reading a fic where Dean was in prison and Elllen posed as his wife so that she could visit and pass along some information. This fanfiction really grabbed my attention, and my imagination. I would love to read more on this theme...

I thought there was once a comm here for supernatural femslash but I can't find it now :(

I did find spn_grlskickass and spnpussypalace, which are both comms for the women of Supernatural. Dreamwidth also has a comm...supernatural_women, I think. All of those should offer some femslash.

If I can make a suggestion...this (http://latentfunction.livejournal.com/399651.html) is my favorite femslashy Supernatural fic, of those I've read. It's Jo/Pamela, slots perfectly into canon and is very much in character for both ladies. It's also incredibly hot and awesome!

I only got into Supernatural a while ago, and from the secrets and comments I saw from various members of fandom I expected all the women to be shrieking harridans.

Then I found the female characters to be less rage-inducing than the dudes and wondered what the fuck sort of fandom twilight zone I'd stepped into :/

lol, same here. I didn't watch season 2 until season 3 was airing. Same for season 3 prior to season 4. So the mass amount of hatred for Jo and Ruby and Bela made no damn sense to me.

i was really 'eh' about Jo mainly because I didn't ship dean/jo. i thought she was pretty bad ass definitely, but i'll be the first to admit that she became a more tolerable character when it became obvious that jo and dean weren't going to hook up. (i would have enjoyed her presence in the series more if she'd been more interested in sam, tbh).

i cried like a baby when she died, though, and still miss the heck out of her.

as for ruby- i never liked her. she wasn't a horrible character, but she certainly didn't come close to being a favorite. i actively started hating her when she screwed sam over, which i think is where a lot of hatred for her character comes from (at least, from what i've witnessed, and i've been a pretty avid spnfandom participant since s2.

and bela... i think people's dislike of her is understandable. she really screwed over sam and dean quite a few times. i was one of the ones who was really digging her in the beginning, but she eventually started getting on my nerves. AND i liked the idea of her and dean, so it wasn't that she was a potential love interest either. she just got annoying.

and since we're on the topic of spn fems: i hated meg from the beginning, thought anna was boring, have no real opinion of lisa, adore the heck out of ellen (and i even like the idea of dean/ellen), and don't care about jessica or Cassie. I wish we'd seen more of the two police women and that lawyer chick, though.

so yeah, not everyone in fandom is bad. i've met A LOT of people who are just not as extreme as a lot of people in the fandom claim everyone to be, and i hate that everyone always zeroes in on those baddies which just makes the fandom look a lot worst.

I have to admit, I never liked Bela. But I never much liked Crowley either. Her type of character has never been one that appealed to me. I never outright hated her, I just didn't like her. But word on Jo and Ruby. Don't get the Jo hate at all, and Ruby was awesome first as an ally, and then she made an awesome villain.

See, this is why seeing very specific flashes of the fandom on this comm/elsewhere kept me from watching the series for ages- until my fiance convinced me to give SPN a try after he got me hooked on Firefly, etc, also a million years after the fact .

I'm about halfway through season four, and I find Ellen to be flawless and wish there was a Hell of a lot more of her. People actually dislike Ellen? Why on earth? Already spoiled for how that ends.
