Wow, back in the days, I remember Hetalia being free-for-all shipping-wise. Sounds like the fandom gets shittier and shittier, sorry to hear that.

China and Japan from Hetalia. I assume the countries' real-life relationship is what sours the fandom on the pairing.

I've always wondered why Japan/China is such a non-no while Turkey/Greece is accepted...

Methinks, it's that we know more about the history between Japan and China, and that in Hetalia canon, Japan is almost always a big dick to China and one of the few relationship in Hetalia that was shown in a serious negative light.

That said, it doesn't mean that Turkey/Greece is without controversy. It may be more accepted than China/Japan, but there are a significant amount of fans who are just as uncomfortable with the pairing even if their relationship improved in modern day. I think it's also Himaruya never really focus much on Greece's forced into subjugation to Turkey. We know he was and there was glimpses but not a real strip focused on it, especially with the speculation that Turkey killed Mama Greece.

Maybe this is partly why. But doesn't stop me from rolling my eyes when I see a fan say that this pairing is sick because of the wars and dreadful massacres and then comment that Turkey/Greece is sooo hot.

granted, I haven't been around the fandom in about half a year, but I don't remember this ship being much maligned...

? It pretty much always has been and I have been in the fandom for nearly four years.

IMO, I think it's more accepted now than back then.

I can get where you're coming from, OP. I don't see their relationship as any worse (based on irl historical implications) than a lot of what gets shipped in Hetalia fandom, and I think they could be pretty cute together.

Yeah, this. Yes, there have been wars. There have been atrocities. But these things happen to some degree to pretty much any two countries near each other. There's also a LOT more years of cultural interchange and peaceful coexistence.

I'm not saying anything Japan did in WWII was remotely okay, but there's a lot more to Sino-Japanese relations through the years than the Mukden incident and the Rape of Nanking.

(Besides, all the other countries in the area were part of the Chinese tributary system. Japan/China's the closest thing to a partnership of equals! And I don't even read hetalia enough to have strong shipping opinions why am I writing this post)

Thank you for this! Seriously, thank you! I don't actively ship ChinaxJapan like the OP does (mostly due to lack of available material), but the attitude a lot of Hetalia fans take to the pairing has always really bugged me, and you just spelled out why perfectly.

Except, you know, the Japanese government never apologized for the war crimes they committed in WWII. Hell, they even tried to conveniently ignore/gloss over the horrible stuff Japan did in their history textbooks (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_history_textbook_controversies#Current_Issues).

Not to mention there are still Class-A war criminals enshrined in the Yasukuni Jinja, a place pretty frequently visited by Japanese prime ministers, high government officials and politicians.

Yeah, look at America and Japan. Bombing Pearl Harbor, firebombing Tokyo, raping the Okinawa women, A-bombing Nagasaki/Hiroshima... And in the present the people are extremely friendly towards each other.

That, and there's also the fact that in Hetalia canon, the behaviour of the countries and the behaviour of their governments/people doesn't always seem to line up exactly (See: England continuing to be cold toward America even though our governments have gotten along for decades, Germany's overall discomfort with his "boss"'s behaviour during WWII, etc.), so even if two countries don't have a great relationship historically or in the present, that's not necessarily a good reason not to ship it. Not to mention, all the people who ship Cold War-era America/Russia, but still act like China/Japan is an impossible pairing.

im sorry to hear this op. i know those two have a dark and turbulent past but then again so do a bunch of other countries. it sounds like the haters need to pick up a fucking history book before they start spewing shit.

Man, it's been a long time since I was in this fandom... I seem to remember everyone being happy about pairings that you random stick together after pulling names from a hat. Or maybe I'm just forcing my own opinions on fandom, haha.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever actually seen anger and hate for this pairing, just heard about it. I don't think I've ever been thought less of for shipping it, either, but most of the people I talk to in this fandom are pretty laid back, shipping wise.

Anyway, I would love to have a fellow shipper to talk to, so feel free to hit me up on LJ. :)

Do I hang out in the wrong fandom spaces? Where are all the shipping wars? People keep telling me that this fandom has horrible shipping wars and that people will flame you if you ship anything that isn't popular, but I've never witnessed a single flame war about pairings or got any crap for my OTP even though it breaks a popular pairing.

Ruthlessly against it? Not in my experience. It's not the most popular ship but I've never seen any rage about it.

I like their relationship. I'm not sure if I ship them or prefer them as 'brothers' but they are interesting together.
