generally speaking most of the fic i find on ff.net isn't up to my standarts. there's a lot more rubbish on there than i've ever seen on LJ. i'm not saying LJ doesn't have crap as well, but on here i don't have to slough through pages of complete and utter wank to find something i can half-way read.

some time over the last years ff.net has just gained the reputation that everything posted there is crap. so ergo the good writers don't post there anymore. most writers on lj post on ao3 (http://archiveofourown.org) as well which is a fanfic archive the way you like it, so there you go.

Same here. I tend to start out by looking for fic on LJ comms (or ao3), and then once I run out of those I turn to FFN. And guess what? There might be ten times the amount of fic on FFN vs LJ, but of all those stories the number I actually like is usually half of what I managed to find and like on LJ.

that is because here you need to know exactly what you are looking for. On FF you are browsing everything. It's like doing your shopping in a store and wandering aisles vs going to the specific rack carrying the brand you know you like.

EXACTLY, thank you.

I want to throw in while I am here, that unless the writer makes a handy page of links to every installment, in order, good luck finding the chapters.

As much as I like LJ, THIS. Tags don't really help if the person isn't REALLY specific with them, or if they stopped posting before tags were a thing.
