On the flip side, though, I do like ff.net's format better, and I've found some really good fic there, so when people treat ff.net like it's the Worst Place Ever, I have to wonder...

(Same goes for plot points-- the average blogger wouldn't decide to write an "Lol so-and-so has amnesia~~~~!"/"the characters turn into CHIBIS~~~!!!" plot for a 'fic.)
I know I myself changed the material I wrote and how I wrote it drastically after beginning to blog. Keeping a journal helped me a lot with words-- how to use them, what words get the reaction I want, et cetera and so on.
That said, I still post to FFN (and to LJ as well) but I agree that reading at Fanfiction.net is a lot easier and less stressful than reading here on LJ. I prefer the FFN layout by far.

some time over the last years ff.net has just gained the reputation that everything posted there is crap. so ergo the good writers don't post there anymore. most writers on lj post on ao3 (http://archiveofourown.org) as well which is a fanfic archive the way you like it, so there you go.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)Re: "The Pit" - because back in the day 95% of what was posted on there was utter crap, and there was a lot of it. A pit of despair, a pit of sadness, a pit of unorganized trash.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)The amount of appalling writing on ff.net (the SPaG mistakes alone will break a reader's heart) is what makes it such a pit of despair for me.

I also like Archive of Our Own. Just as easy as FF.net. Many are crossposting to it as well.

Honestly, I don't get why authors do them. I mean, I do, but it just seems so nonsensical to me. I know some people are paranoid about RL, but that's why you make a separate LJ for fic. I hate having to add people just to read ONE fic -_-

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)LJ wasn't designed for fanfiction browsing/searching, obviously, but the quality of fic found here (and on AO3 actually) is far higher. Most of the really great authors post HERE and not on FF.net for many reasons such as the fact that they have complete control over their writing and won't wake up one day to find it's been removed for "violating" FF.net's ridiculous rules. One can friends-lock, one can easily edit with updated chapters etc.
It's not terribly hard to search for fic on LJ if one uses Google and/or joins LJ communities that have to do with the show/book/movie etc. of their liking. Plus, the ability to comment and reply to comments on LJ is a lot better than on FF.net. And LJ easily allows private messaging if one wants to get in touch with an author.
Sorry, that was TL;DR. Basically, quality over quantity.

It's a lot easier to find fic in general on ff.net, but it can be frustrating to wade through all the crap to find some good fic.
LJ generally has a higher quality of fic, but depending on how well the fandom is organized, it can be hard to find the fic.
Personally, I'm quite fond of AO3. I think the fic tends to be better and their tagging system makes it easier to find the ships or characters I'm looking for.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)LJ just sucks for rare pairs, to be honest. there usually aren't any active comms for them, and the general fandom fic comms MAY have your pairing, but you have to cross your fingers and hope there's a tag for them or end up going through a bunch of fics looking for your ship and hope that by chance there's a fic there. Though AO3 seems to be my newest favorite option.
but anyway, tl;dr: ff.net is a lot better for rare pairs, even with the crappy quality of most fic.

Fandoms on LJ are the ones that are willing to put up with LJ's bullshit for the sake of less-awful fic. The ones that are FFN-centric generally attract people less willing to put up with those obstacles and bullshit, but thus also the type of people to be the same about their writing.
