I think part of it is that, because it is so easy to post on ff.net, there are a lot of fics that maybe didn't need to be posted. I mean, I know some of my younger fic that I posted there suck horrible. >_>;

On the flip side, though, I do like ff.net's format better, and I've found some really good fic there, so when people treat ff.net like it's the Worst Place Ever, I have to wonder...

Because for the longest time, most of the stuff found on FFN was absolute crap? Even my supervisor at work knew it was "The Pit of Voles". Perhaps it's improved, but 95% of the fics I find on there are not well written. I like LJ for fics because of the communities that I follow usually have a better quality of fics. Not saying there isn't crap in those places are well, but the variety and quality is better. *shrugs* FFN has cleaned up a lot, but it's still not where a lot of people post their best works. This is all IMHO, btw.

I believe FFn was referred to as "The Pit" back in the day, (see also: Pit of Voles) because back when people got tired of the bad writing being mixed in with the good, a bunch of the migrated to journal communities like this one (GreatestJournal, JournalFen, et cetera), and then felt they were a better core group of writers overall. This is understandable in part because your average blogger is usually a fairly decent writer-- you don't see the really, really horrible fanfiction being written and posted by the average (regular) blogger.

(Same goes for plot points-- the average blogger wouldn't decide to write an "Lol so-and-so has amnesia~~~~!"/"the characters turn into CHIBIS~~~!!!" plot for a 'fic.)

I know I myself changed the material I wrote and how I wrote it drastically after beginning to blog. Keeping a journal helped me a lot with words-- how to use them, what words get the reaction I want, et cetera and so on.

That said, I still post to FFN (and to LJ as well) but I agree that reading at Fanfiction.net is a lot easier and less stressful than reading here on LJ. I prefer the FFN layout by far.

[identity profile] twistedbones.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
generally speaking most of the fic i find on ff.net isn't up to my standarts. there's a lot more rubbish on there than i've ever seen on LJ. i'm not saying LJ doesn't have crap as well, but on here i don't have to slough through pages of complete and utter wank to find something i can half-way read.

some time over the last years ff.net has just gained the reputation that everything posted there is crap. so ergo the good writers don't post there anymore. most writers on lj post on ao3 (http://archiveofourown.org) as well which is a fanfic archive the way you like it, so there you go.

In my opinion, LJ has a much better user interface for reading fic. Easier on the eyes, no intrusive ads, formating, organizing, all of that I find easier to navigate and such on LJ than on ff.net. One of the reasons I loathe ff.net is the chapters and lack of one page viewing. People over there tend to post a story with 50 "chapters" that are like 200 words each. It's fucking annoying as all hell. You don't get a lot of that on LJ.

Re: "The Pit" - because back in the day 95% of what was posted on there was utter crap, and there was a lot of it. A pit of despair, a pit of sadness, a pit of unorganized trash.

I don't have trouble finding fics to read and I really don't care where I read them from, but when it comes to posting my own fics I only do it at ff.net. I've figured that by doing that I'll forever be considered either a 13-year old or a really bad writer, but who cares. So far it's the only user friendly fanfiction archive in the whole web, especially because it gives all the writers equal chances of success and exists solely for fanfiction. I don’t have to be an interesting person there to get my fics read, like the trend seems to be in LJ. I don’t have to guess which tags would be suitable, because it’s simple. I can just write, reply to all the feedback I get and easily follow how liked my stories are overall.

I know that LJ sux as an archive, but I think the reason FF.net is referred to as the Pit is that it is unmoderated, and the amount of dreck that sits on it is a bit overwhelming. Being the hypocrite I am, I post there, but I rarely read anything there because I find wading through the sheer amount of crap there demoralising. I much prefer a moderated sight; you know the majority of stuff on those sights is at least grammatically acceptable.

The amount of appalling writing on ff.net (the SPaG mistakes alone will break a reader's heart) is what makes it such a pit of despair for me.

I actually like FF.net for the fact that it's so easy to post. I'm in so many LJ comms and each has posting formats. Rules on what should be in headers, what needs to be tagged, that it's hard to remember sometimes.

I also like Archive of Our Own. Just as easy as FF.net. Many are crossposting to it as well.

Friend locks are the WORST.

Honestly, I don't get why authors do them. I mean, I do, but it just seems so nonsensical to me. I know some people are paranoid about RL, but that's why you make a separate LJ for fic. I hate having to add people just to read ONE fic -_-

On a technical level, FFN is absolutely the best website out there. I archive my stuff there, but I don't usually use it to seek out fics, because criticism usually rests on the quantity of badfic there and it's true in my fandoms.

FF.net is The Pit for various reasons, including their banning of explicit sexual content and the fact that, in this anon's experience, one must search through pages and pages and pages of pure crap to find even one decent story. FF.net is like writing training wheels, imo.

LJ wasn't designed for fanfiction browsing/searching, obviously, but the quality of fic found here (and on AO3 actually) is far higher. Most of the really great authors post HERE and not on FF.net for many reasons such as the fact that they have complete control over their writing and won't wake up one day to find it's been removed for "violating" FF.net's ridiculous rules. One can friends-lock, one can easily edit with updated chapters etc.

It's not terribly hard to search for fic on LJ if one uses Google and/or joins LJ communities that have to do with the show/book/movie etc. of their liking. Plus, the ability to comment and reply to comments on LJ is a lot better than on FF.net. And LJ easily allows private messaging if one wants to get in touch with an author.

Sorry, that was TL;DR. Basically, quality over quantity.

[identity profile] bayliss.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
FF.net does almost nothing about plagersim. They took six months to finally remove the account that stole fics that were posted on my journal friends locked. I haven't posted anything to the pit in years not since my nc-17 fics were removed. That's why it's the pit.

'Cause we can post our porn on LJ.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
There are upsides and downsides to both imo.

It's a lot easier to find fic in general on ff.net, but it can be frustrating to wade through all the crap to find some good fic.

LJ generally has a higher quality of fic, but depending on how well the fandom is organized, it can be hard to find the fic.

Personally, I'm quite fond of AO3. I think the fic tends to be better and their tagging system makes it easier to find the ships or characters I'm looking for.

(no subject)

Because while LJ is harder to navigate, FFN bans certain fandoms and genres. Also, FFN doesn't lead to discussion about the fic, which many authors find important and meaningful.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostly read on ff.net because most of my ships are rare pairs and usually super hard to find. ff.net is nice and simple just to pick the characters, and one can't be very picky with quality rare pair fics because there's usually <5 to begin with, so you sometimes cry tears of joy over the crappiest fic just because FINALLY A FIC OF YOUR OTP~
LJ just sucks for rare pairs, to be honest. there usually aren't any active comms for them, and the general fandom fic comms MAY have your pairing, but you have to cross your fingers and hope there's a tag for them or end up going through a bunch of fics looking for your ship and hope that by chance there's a fic there. Though AO3 seems to be my newest favorite option.
but anyway, tl;dr: ff.net is a lot better for rare pairs, even with the crappy quality of most fic.

LJ is a shit format, but the writing quality is better. FFN is a much better format, but the writing quality is shit.

Fandoms on LJ are the ones that are willing to put up with LJ's bullshit for the sake of less-awful fic. The ones that are FFN-centric generally attract people less willing to put up with those obstacles and bullshit, but thus also the type of people to be the same about their writing.
