FF.net is The Pit for various reasons, including their banning of explicit sexual content and the fact that, in this anon's experience, one must search through pages and pages and pages of pure crap to find even one decent story. FF.net is like writing training wheels, imo.

LJ wasn't designed for fanfiction browsing/searching, obviously, but the quality of fic found here (and on AO3 actually) is far higher. Most of the really great authors post HERE and not on FF.net for many reasons such as the fact that they have complete control over their writing and won't wake up one day to find it's been removed for "violating" FF.net's ridiculous rules. One can friends-lock, one can easily edit with updated chapters etc.

It's not terribly hard to search for fic on LJ if one uses Google and/or joins LJ communities that have to do with the show/book/movie etc. of their liking. Plus, the ability to comment and reply to comments on LJ is a lot better than on FF.net. And LJ easily allows private messaging if one wants to get in touch with an author.

Sorry, that was TL;DR. Basically, quality over quantity.

I think LJ is shit for chaptered fics, tbh, but I had a 500+ review story once deleted off of FFN for violating ToS (rating wasn't high enough? Lies!) and randomly during maintenance one of my stories disappeared (several hundred reviews!). (The latter happened to some big BNF in the InuYasha fandom at the same time, I remember that time well, because her story was well over 1,000 reviews.)

I think the social aspect of LJ-- and how you can interact easily with other fandom goers/have meta discussion/etc is way, way better than FFN ever thought of being.

Why don't you like LJ for chaptered fics? I've posted several, and have no issues - it's easy to add a 'part two' or 'next chapter' link at the bottom......

A lot of people DON'T do that, though, and then you have to go hunting around the journal/tags trying to find other parts of the story. It can be frustrating. If you add the links in to the previous chapter, though, I don't see a problem.

That's so, but that's down to them, not on LJ.

This! Why wade through shit and waste my time reading half a fic only to back button and start the process again? Its not that badfic doesn't exist on lj (tbh I've probably written some myself) its just that the good generally outweighs the bad here as opposed to ff.net where bad is the overwhelming majority.

Whereas with AO3, one has to...search through pages and pages of pure crap to get anything decent. I'm really sick of people raving about how AO3 is the best thing ever when 90% of what I come across there is ooc garbage, ridiculously poorly written kink fic, or so loaded down with bs tags that just figuring out what's going on is a chore.
