YES to your first paragraph. It's because LJ really is a bigger fandom playground that writers are more willing to post their fics here. They can interact with fandom on many different levels on the same account they post their fics in, for example. There's something about LJ that leads to better visibility both as a writer and a participant in fandom, thus making them feel a part of the community of their choice.

I think the customization aspect of LJ is a big part of it too -- you can't really put a personal stamp on your own space/account like you can here with layouts and icon options -- which helps people more comfortable in their fandom environment.
