I think LJ is popular because it's good for multiple fannish uses. You can't post discussions or meta on ff.net, for example. You can't host a big bang or fic exchange there very easily. You can't post art or icons. It's really more of a platform for communities and interaction more than just archiving fic.

As for ff.net, I think it gets a bad rap to some extent. But I also think that there's so much posted there that it can be hard to find the good stuff sometimes, especially in large fandoms. I rarely go there because I find it really disorganized and difficult to search. I don't like that you have very few options for tagging and describing your fic to let people know what it is. And banning NC-17 fic alienates a lot of people.

For pure archival purposes, I much prefer AO3.

YES to your first paragraph. It's because LJ really is a bigger fandom playground that writers are more willing to post their fics here. They can interact with fandom on many different levels on the same account they post their fics in, for example. There's something about LJ that leads to better visibility both as a writer and a participant in fandom, thus making them feel a part of the community of their choice.

I think the customization aspect of LJ is a big part of it too -- you can't really put a personal stamp on your own space/account like you can here with layouts and icon options -- which helps people more comfortable in their fandom environment.
