I agree with everything in this secret.

people who think LJ is so much better than FFN are simply the hipsters of fandom, to me. There's no difference really, you just have to know what to look for on FFN.

You've never been plagierised and have never had to fight to get it removed from ff.net. I most definately not a fandom hipster.

My fic was plagiarised and ff.net removed it pretty fast. But maybe that was because I was really well known in that fandom and there was a dozen people who emailed ff.net about it.

Three other people and I had a total of 54 fictions plagiarised. It took them six months, emails once a week, and emails from the tree others plus the folks from stop -plagiarism to get something done. Mind you, mine were nc - 17 fics and they all were rpf. You'd think once some one reported that it would have been taken care of. The fics were taken from my permanent account, which has always been friends locked. The website still sucks donkey butt.

This! People think that the only problem people have with the pit is badfic, but it extends beyond that. Plagerism is rife and nobody seems to do anything about it and even when something is done about it the person doing the plagerising doesn't really learn from it or even see why its a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I have. And I STILL prefer ff.net. But then my issue got resolved.

To each their own.

how does it feel to be brain-dead?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
how does it feel to be an asshole?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
fucking fantastic!

I've answered your question, now you answer mine!

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
no no no no no no. calling people you don't know, for pretty much arbitrary reasons, hipsters, is being an asshole. responding with a jibe is not being an asshole. it's immature, but that i have no problem admitting to.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you look *for*? I know what to avoid, but even when I find decent spelling and grammar and no obvious red flags in the summary, there's still a lot of fics that are just not that impressive. Serious question; I could use some tips at navigating the archive, because I haven't read much fic lately.

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
For FFN I always bump up the filter for the wordcount to at least 20 000, selected completed only and look for something with less than 20 chapters. There's still not an overwhelming number of great fic but it seems to help?

Also maybe check out the C2s, and when you do find something you like, check out the author's favourites.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
A good idea - I'm very fond of drabbles, but FFN probably isn't a great place to look for them. C2s I should definitely look into more, though.

[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I second the checking the number of chapter method. My general rule of thumb is that I only click on a fic if dividing the total wordcount by the number of chapters gives you an average chapter length of 1,000 words and up.

I also filter out anything under a certain word count, but I do it more because I like long fic better than short fic. I've found a lot of good short fics and ficlets on ff.net, but mostly when I'm browsing there, I'm looking for really long fic that I can download to my laptop or Nook (since there are apps and software programs that let you easily download fic from ff.net, but the only way to do it from LJ is to copy-paste the whole fic).

The best way to navigate FFN is through favorites lists. If you can find one fic that you like, go to the author's profile and check out their favorite stories and favorite authors. If they write good fic, the stuff they recommend will at least be readable, and once you find other stuff that you like, you can go to those author's profiles to see their favorites, and basically navigate that way, without even touching the firehose of the Just In page.

I am so not a hipster. Oh, dear gods. Aging hippy, yes. Hipster? No.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
ya do know that hipster is the modern equivalent, right?
