Aside from the fact that it has huge amounts of badfic (gathered there, IMO, because the site is easy to find, and relatively easy to use, I always haad an impression that there was a culture of young teen ficcers banding together to attack anyone who dares tell them their writing needs work. I always thought that was at least part of why it got called "The Pit of Voles".
LJ is not a site designed for fanfic, no, but it is a site for community. I think that is it's biggest draw - fans want somewhere they can chat, discussion and generally socialize.
I personally like both, FFN is a huge resource for reading, an easy place for posting. LJ on the other hand is good for community. AO3 is also becoming a good hunting ground for reading, though nI have not tried to post there (I am considering it, my one active fic could run into songfic crusaders at any time and another back-up would be good).
I just hope, for LJ fandom's sake, people remember how difficult it can be to find fic and are diligent with tags and masterlists.
