There are a lot of fics that maybe didn't need to be posted

Why? Because they're not as well-written as you'd like? Because they're not about things you like? Granted, there are a lot of fics on FFN that are very simple, not the greatest characterization (IMO) and the authors have not remotely acquired -- much less mastered -- the skill of showing versus telling.

But you know what? They enjoyed writing them, and there are clearly people who enjoy reading them. So who are you to say what needs to happen with somebody's hobby?

When someone feels the need to type out "hai hai" instead of "yes yes" in a story that's in English, I really have to side-eye their fic. It's not plot/characterization/etc. that bothers me so much, it's formatting, grammar, knowing how to use the English language, random author's notes in the middle of the fic (a.n. just like this one!) stuff like that.

I say because I can, and because that's my opinion. /shrug

Fair enough, but I have to say that "didn't need to be posted" really holds true for fanfiction in general if you want to think about it that way. We're all sucking off of someone else's canon; no matter how badly written or well-written a piece of fanfiction is, it's still just a fanwork.

(And nothing online NEEDS to be posted anyway, to argue that way.)

That said, I think the whole weeaboo thing was something people hit into years ago, but it's faded a lot from fandom in general, thank God. I made those mistakes when I was younger and I thought it sounded okay. Now it throws me out of the story like nobody's business, but back then it was The Norm in most (at least anime and Japanese game) fandoms.

I don't mind fanwork, and I think that it can be posted. But, at the same time, I wish people (including younger me) would have taken the time to edit, format, etc. instead of just posting it because. :/

IDK, maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but I literally just read a fic before the F!S post went up that had "hai" being used instead of "yes", and I was left going O_________o. You're typing in English, aren't you? The story is in English, isn't it? Yes.

I had random-japanese-word as much as the next girl, but I do feel like there is occasionally a reason for it too. Fruits Basket is a fantastic example where the suffixes are a major part of the relationships, and it would be very difficult to replicate that without using Japanese here and there.

TBH, I don't mind honorifics as much, though I do think they're annoying when they are used too much in a fic when an English equivalent would work just as well. ( Sesshomaru Sama -vs- Lord Sesshomaru, for example.) Like, -chan, I don't mind.

Hai hai, or Occha instead of tea just bug the hell out of me. |D

Oh yeah, I was more saying there are places for random Japanese words, but "yes" or "tea" work better in English. However, I'm not a Japanese scholar (by any stretch of the imagination), but I'm sure there are words (besides honorifics) where the meaning is lost in translation, or there simply isn't a good translation. Deja vu is a great example although French in origin. There isn't a good 'native' English word that can take its place so you might have to use Deja vu and put a footnote describing it.

I agree, when there are words that just don't work, then they should stay in Japanese. But, yeah, when simple words aren't translated I can't see the fic as anything but shite. :/

I don't mind the -sama thing. I've been to used to watching anime in subs that that's stuck with me. Even if it's written as "Lord Sesshoumaru," I still end up mentally reading "Sesshoumaru-sama." :P

However, random Japanese words like "shiro" for castle bug the ever living shit out of me.

I'm currently reading a Sesshoumaru/Kagome WIP (i like them ok? >_> i still read fic for them from time to time even if i haven't touched inuyasha since high school)) and the author, as amazing a writer as she is, uses "shiro" in place of castle. It's always clunky sounding and throws me every time I see it. I've been mentally blocking it and using castle in its place when I come across it.

I think if I saw the word "shiro" in use over and over I'd be confused as hell because to me shiro = (color) white, and I'd be confused the whole time... ^^;

Hahaha. It depends on the inflection of the word. One way, shi-RO, is castle. SHI-ro is white. I think I have that right. It's been so long and my basic Japanese is so rusty. ^^;;;

It's like Sake and Sake. One is the rice wine and the other means salmon. :3

I don't mind of fanfic writers write in their native language, but yeah, when random Japanese words are thrown in randomly to be ~cool~ I have issues with it.

I hate it because you have to translate it, and I think that fanfiction.net should be an English language only website and that foreign authors shouldn't be allowed to post here, or post on fanfiction sites in their native tongue so they don't pollute the site with their non English stories.

Okay, now I just think you're trolling.

I mean, there's a difference between people writing it in a non-English language, and people writing stuff like

"Occha!" the tsugoi kawaii girl's boss called to her.

"Hai hai" she replied, hurrying to take occha (tea) to her boss, mumbling "baka" under her breath..."

Lol, really? Its not about them being "not as well written as I'd like" its about the majority of fic on there being utter shite! Its not about having "not the greatest" characterisation or whatever- most of the "characters" I read about may as well have been written into an original fic for the amount they resemble canon characters. Don't even get me started on the purple prose, seme/uke, self insert, healing!cock, woobie!male character, mary sue bs that seems to be a norm there and furthermore the immature entitlement of authors with their "oh I didn't get any reviews so I wont post the next chapter til I do" and the "what should I have happen next in my story, vote for the following options" crap.

I have no issue with people writing for a hobby regardless of skill (I enjoy it myself and do not consider myself good at all) but the issue I have is people put themselves and their writing out their to be judged ("constructive criticism welcome") and then have a fit when anybody gives any kind of suggestion ("omg stop flaming"). Obviously this is not unique to ff.net, but its certainly more common.

I have steered clear of the aptly named Pit for years now, so perhaps things have changed since then, but when comparing lj and ff.net I have to hit the back button considerably less on lj. I will say that the system for finding fics on ff.net is very handy though- being able to sort by character/ship etc.

I didn't say there wasn't shitty fic on lj, there is certainly less of it though...or perhaps WAY more of it on ff.net, which is exactly why I prefer lj to ff.net- I don't have to spend hours trawling through shit to find good fic. I understand navigating a new fandom can be hard on lj but once you know where to look its a lot easier to find good fic (or at least average fic) than it is to find bad.
