I think part of it is that, because it is so easy to post on ff.net, there are a lot of fics that maybe didn't need to be posted. I mean, I know some of my younger fic that I posted there suck horrible. >_>;

On the flip side, though, I do like ff.net's format better, and I've found some really good fic there, so when people treat ff.net like it's the Worst Place Ever, I have to wonder...

Ease of use =/= quality

Something can be complicated to use but still squeeze shit out like you're stepping on a tube of toothpaste.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're right, it doesn't.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this analogy. Sorry, my mind is kind of fail today. |D

There is, in fact, shitty fic on Livejournal. It's just harder to find.

[identity profile] kartos.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
lol oh wait, you were serious? Most fic is shitty, and it's impossible to navigate on LJ.

[identity profile] made-of-tin.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
On the second point, I'm actually the opposite. I'm not sure why but I can't read anything on FFN without getting a terrible headache. I read fic online all the time, and it's never been a problem on any other site o.O;
Their logo is pretty neat though.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
There have definitely been some fics I couldn't read on FFN, mostly because of the formatting of the fic, so I guess it's just a matter of preferences + formatting of the individual fic.

[identity profile] made-of-tin.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is true :)

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure if it will work for you, but I browse ffnet in mobile mode to avoid getting headaches from the worst font. Then I change window size accordingly. Maybe give it a try? Just replace the www with m

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Paragraphs on ff.net are a lot wider than they are in books/other text formats. It's pretty hard to get used to unless you resize your browser.

[identity profile] vampirenaomi.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
On the top of the page, you can choose between full, 3/4 and 1/2 to adjust the width of the paragraphs to suit your tastes. I prefer them at 1/2 because the default is so wide that it makes most paragraphs just one or two lines long, and I hate reading that.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem with FF.net. I run two Sylish scripts on the page ("Fanfiction.net - grey background, story font" and "Fanfiction.net - Less Contrast - Light Grey") and that has solved my problem. The mobile version on my Nook also doesn't bother me. Maybe something like that could help you? It sucks so bad to get migraines from your computer...

[identity profile] fanficcleanup.livejournal.com 2012-04-17 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanfiction.net gives me headaches, too, but not bad ones.

[identity profile] hoggle2807.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of fics that maybe didn't need to be posted

Why? Because they're not as well-written as you'd like? Because they're not about things you like? Granted, there are a lot of fics on FFN that are very simple, not the greatest characterization (IMO) and the authors have not remotely acquired -- much less mastered -- the skill of showing versus telling.

But you know what? They enjoyed writing them, and there are clearly people who enjoy reading them. So who are you to say what needs to happen with somebody's hobby?

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
When someone feels the need to type out "hai hai" instead of "yes yes" in a story that's in English, I really have to side-eye their fic. It's not plot/characterization/etc. that bothers me so much, it's formatting, grammar, knowing how to use the English language, random author's notes in the middle of the fic (a.n. just like this one!) stuff like that.

I say because I can, and because that's my opinion. /shrug

[identity profile] hooves.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, but I have to say that "didn't need to be posted" really holds true for fanfiction in general if you want to think about it that way. We're all sucking off of someone else's canon; no matter how badly written or well-written a piece of fanfiction is, it's still just a fanwork.

(And nothing online NEEDS to be posted anyway, to argue that way.)

That said, I think the whole weeaboo thing was something people hit into years ago, but it's faded a lot from fandom in general, thank God. I made those mistakes when I was younger and I thought it sounded okay. Now it throws me out of the story like nobody's business, but back then it was The Norm in most (at least anime and Japanese game) fandoms.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind fanwork, and I think that it can be posted. But, at the same time, I wish people (including younger me) would have taken the time to edit, format, etc. instead of just posting it because. :/

IDK, maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but I literally just read a fic before the F!S post went up that had "hai" being used instead of "yes", and I was left going O_________o. You're typing in English, aren't you? The story is in English, isn't it? Yes.

Lol, really? Its not about them being "not as well written as I'd like" its about the majority of fic on there being utter shite! Its not about having "not the greatest" characterisation or whatever- most of the "characters" I read about may as well have been written into an original fic for the amount they resemble canon characters. Don't even get me started on the purple prose, seme/uke, self insert, healing!cock, woobie!male character, mary sue bs that seems to be a norm there and furthermore the immature entitlement of authors with their "oh I didn't get any reviews so I wont post the next chapter til I do" and the "what should I have happen next in my story, vote for the following options" crap.

I have no issue with people writing for a hobby regardless of skill (I enjoy it myself and do not consider myself good at all) but the issue I have is people put themselves and their writing out their to be judged ("constructive criticism welcome") and then have a fit when anybody gives any kind of suggestion ("omg stop flaming"). Obviously this is not unique to ff.net, but its certainly more common.

I have steered clear of the aptly named Pit for years now, so perhaps things have changed since then, but when comparing lj and ff.net I have to hit the back button considerably less on lj. I will say that the system for finding fics on ff.net is very handy though- being able to sort by character/ship etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
But there is shitty fic here too! And on adultfanfiction and archiveofourown and AoA and every other fic storage thing ever in existance.

Holy crap, chill out. A lot of us feel that way, doesn't mean we're actively trying to tell someone how to have fun with their hobby.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly what I was going to say, word-for-word in the first sentence.

On LJ, people tend to put in a lot of effort into fanfiction, partly because the better it is, the more reviews it'll get in a place that's not necessarily meant for posting fanfiction. That and maybe a little bit of fear of being mocked and torn up for shortcomings.

Edit: That said, no, it definitely is not the worst possible place ever; that's an exaggeration. I do remember finding some really cute, silly LotR fics there. Some of my favorites, in fact, because they were care-free and marked as "Humor". Fics like that have their merits and there's a time when a person does want to kick back and read one or two humorous one-shots where the author isn't taking Fandom too seriously (but still in a respectful way).

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 01:06 am (UTC)(link)

I think this is true as well. :)

No, no it's not. And I do love the way to check for what kind of fic, humor, family fic, etc. It's a nice way to filter things. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. There is a lot of crappy terrible and heinous fic on LJ. I find my fic gets jack nada reviews on LJ and ff.n cannot get enough of me. Fanfiction.net is much better for the ego.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Same - I always post to AO3 and LJ before ff.net, but it's still ff.net giving me comments and reviews after all this time. LJ, maybe one or two. AO3, none at all. FF.net? A bunch. I can't dislike it for that;;
