Even if FF.net does tend to be a headache when you are trying to edit stories without it eating all the punctuation marks, it is also true that it is easier to find rare fics or fics for smaller fandoms there.
AO3 seems like a good option, but I've found the quantity of fics available for older fandoms is really small, not comparable to the huge quantity acumulated over the years in FF.net. (this is important for people like me, who prefer rare pairings and the possibility of finding them rises when there are more fics available). AO3 seems to me like a good place for new or current popular fandoms, though.
Also, in FF.net you can find fics of people that had left fandom definitely and that are not available anywhere else. As for searching gems between all the garbage, I have a system: I go searching fics marked as favorites by my favorite authors, or by people who has reviewed fics I like; chances are they have found other good fics I haven't read, and it is possible they share similar tastes to mine.
(Also, I think it depends on what language you're using. LJ as a fandom vehicle is used by less people in the Spanish fandom than their English counterpart. I perceive the Spanish fandom to be more active in FF.net than LJ or AO3)
