Plus the fact that ff.net did mass deletions a few years ago. For some people, losing the NC-17 stuff without warning was the final straw. I don't know if it's allowed now or not, but it wasn't for awhile. The perception for some is that it's an archive for the tween fic writers in part because of censoring of porn fics and in part because there was so much badfic there.

It's not, but a lot of people use the M rating for porn anyway. ff.net has such uneven moderation that a lot of it just flies under the radar.

Yes, but if you do that--or even if you use an M rating for something that is not that porny, but definitely has obviously got sex going on in it--you are then vulnerable to spite reporting.

I always figured I lost my account in the mass deletions, but then some asshole on FW claimed that I lost my account because they reported me, which is certainly not something I wouldn't put past that particular person.

It wasn't just the NC-17 stuff. There were other deletions, for song fic, and other fics that used quotes... even if it was intended to be a pop culture reference. They had a delete happy nature there for awhile. "Oh! this person who you've never heard of says your fic uses quotations without saying who they belong to. DELETED!"

Meanwhile, LJ was growing and so a lot of really good authors were posting their stuff in their personal journals first, and then sending it over to FFN. And, I think there was a restriction as to the number of favorite fics you could have at first, so you had to hunt down the stories you liked to see if they had updated. Additionally, the big lists of characters you can sort by is kinda new, but the forums and C2's are newer still. So having a group on LJ where it was just for your pairing, or gen fic, or porn was great because you didn't have to search through hundreds of stories to find what you were looking for.

A lot of groups on LJ had (and some still have) an age restriction by the moderators before you could join their community, so it became kind of an "adults-only" kind of thing, while the teenagers and tweens were left at FFN. It gave it a sense of exclusivity, which meant that the people that could get into the groups on LJ were somehow "elite" and why would they want to go back to FFN, it's just a pit.

Not that it's stopped me any. I go back and forth all the time.

I hated that they deleted "songfics" in that I hated that they said No to fics who had any quotation at all in them. That said, the songfics that reference an entire song annoy the shit out of me, now. Mostly because I hate seeing song quotes smack dab in the middle of the writing.

If I choose to quote a song I quote the big relevant verse (or line) at the start, kind of like I did here (http://swayingtheflame.livejournal.com/122577.html). And then sometimes I link the actual song it's from/the version I would like people to hear.

But the days of songfics where the song lyrics heavily outweighed the actual word count of the story? I do not miss those at all. It takes a really good author to write a "proper" songfic-- one that really jives well with the lyrics of the song so that they don't appear jarring or annoying or just out of place.

But they got deletion-happy and that was SO ANNOYING. Cause they'd not do a damn thing about plagiarism but someone who quoted the president of the USA would get their 'fic deleted. Wat.

I hadn't thought of the "update" stuff, but years ago, there wasn't a review reply system at all (and then they implemented one and told everyone to reply in PMs instead of in the fics), and there wasn't an author or fanfic alert system, either. You pretty much had to keep checking back on your review page to see if the stories you'd reviewed had updated at all. Whereas with LJ, add favorite authors to your flist and check back to see if any more stories/chapters/etc are being posted!

That said, I think FFN's biggest downfall (and I hope you don't mind me saying this here, Simply) is the complete lack of community. You get community here at LJ, because you can reply to someone else and others can see that. Whereas on FFN if you see another review you want to "second"/+1 to or add comments to, you can't without PMing the person who did it, and then the author misses out on the great discussion that was, essentially, generated in part by their 'fic!

I post at LJ, DW aaaaaand FFN, and will maybe EVENTUALLY post to AO3 if I can figure it out. I just hate having my stuff in multiple places. I really built up my fic on FFN over the years and prefer to keep it that way. :/

And that's why some of us like it. If I wanted to interact with people, I would go out, not sit in front of the computer reading fanfiction.

Fair enough, but a lot of people want to discuss the fandom as well as read 'fic, which is why we're over here on a blogging/journal site.

Sometimes I just wanna read, not socialize, and I review and move on after reading a story. Other times I want to discuss characters/motives/etc, and that's what I do on LJ.

Yeah I came here to say this. My fav author at the time had her WiP deleted without notice and she had a lot of followers, so of course she and her fans including myself were going to find a better place to post and read.
