While I eventually came around to the idea of Doctor/Rose, I didn't care for it during my first viewing. Even now I'm not obsessed with it, I like it and think it's actually quite cute, but I wouldn't even call myself a fan of the pairing. It's there, and I like it, and that's all there is to it.

Still can't stand River. There's sharing the spotlight with the main character, and then there's hogging it completely. River has far too much compacted into one character, and for me, it doesn't work. She's not "complex" or "interesting" she's a list of clichés that spoil what was once quite a bad ass character.

Rose, Martha, Donna and Amy worked because they were normal women who ended up having a bigger destiny. We can relate to them in one way or another because they're like us. But in the end they're human, and they're flawed. And River looked as if she was shaping up to be another bad ass normal on her first appearance, but then of course to be the Doctor's "equal" she has to be made ridiculously special.

She's half Time Lord.
She's the only one to know the Doctor's real name.
She's got an oh so angsty past.
She managed to grow up with her parents as a self insert best friend.
She can fly the TARDIS properly.
She can fight and shoot guns and it's okay because it's RIVER. (It's not like the Doctor ever froze out his own daughter for doing the same, OH WAIT-)
She can apparently give up the rest of her regenerations to save the Doctor's life.

It's just too much for one character, and it put me off her completely. Say what you want about Rose being special, she at least remained a down to earth girl despite what she ended up becoming, and the Doctor knew when to reprimand her. 11 just seems to beam at River and clap happily at whatever she ends up doing. Most of River's establishing scenes seem to be "oh look at River, isn't she so funny/witty/amazing?"

This, so much.

She can fly the TARDIS properly.

And wow was THAT scene a load of typical Moffat, "I'm going to do something to make my character look awesome even though it makes no fucking scene!" bullshit. See, here's the thing, Stephen: If you ever bothered to watch any old school Who episode with another Time Lord, you'd notice that every fucking TARDIS makes that exact same noise. And no, I DON'T buy that "they're all flying them wrong".

She can fight and shoot guns and it's okay because it's RIVER.

Hell, he even says it usually bothers him, but it's okay now because its her.
Why is okay, Moffat? No, really, WHY?

All of this. Especially the TARDIS bit. The Master, the Rani, and even the random Time Lord in "Terror of the Autons" all have properly functioning ships that sound just like the Doctor's. I can't imagine everyone flies with the parking brake on.

Also not enamoured of the way Moffat decided to work River's spontaneous evolution into Time Lady. I always did like the apocrypha that held regeneration was based in technology.

I would forgive the TARDIS stupid if at some point it was a plot point that her 'taking off the parking brake' was actually breaking something really, really important and it's going to bite the Doctor HARD that he let a random person tinker with it.

Did he let her, or did just barrel in and start messing stuff? I don't remember.
And, honestly, I don't really like the idea of the Doctor getting punished because River's a fucking know-it-all.

The gun thing just killed me, seriously.

But yeah all of this.

Holy snap, you're right. I completely forgot about Jenny in terms of that.
