I can definitely understand this, since my first real foray into fandom with full access to the Internet was swiftly followed by the most useless year of my life so far. I got obsessed and it made me miserable. I'm going to say it's not the fandom's fault--it was probably caused by the way you reacted to it. Fandom isn't sentient, and that means it can't control you. But that also means you have somewhere else to go. I don't think you're "chickenshit", anon. Sometimes inanimate things can push you toward the wrong roads, and you just have to learn what to personally avoid.
