Ha, I remember once venturing into a My Little Pony FiM board and stumbled into vitriolic rants being spewed by people insisting that Princess Celestia was not a troll, dammit! using blocks of text describing all the stuff she had to deal with. And I'm like...'kay, dude, I thought Trollestia was supposed to be a JOKE. You know, because it's FUNNY to picture Celestia sitting up there cackling and making lists of how to ruin Twilight's day for shits and giggles. I guess being in a fandom really causes some people to lose all perspective and logic. Fandom Myopia is one of the most bizarre (and often hilarious) things to witness from outside a fandom, but it's infuriating as fuck when you're inside the fandom, because it completely derails conversations and you can't persuade people out of their attitudes with logical arguments -- if they have some conception built up in their head, like a "totes srs bsns guise!" attitude towards a crack!ship, nothing is going to stop it until they themselves just snap out of it.

wow

trollestia is fucking funny

if they don't like that kind of humor or if they really really like her as a character and find it kind of mean, they don't have to LIKE it or anything, but just, arguing about trollestia on a serious level is whatthefuckery at its finest.

Seconding all of this.

I was once reading a hilarious and amazing fandom discussion with a guy about Mass Effect 2, and he joked that Thane's long, slow, tragic terminal illness plot line was a little silly considering that Shepard had been brought back from the dead at the beginning of that very game. It was great, we all had a good laugh.
We all understood that Shepard's revival was an incredibly complex and expensive surgery that cost billions of dollars and massive resources from a giant shady organization. Nobody brought it up because that would ruin the joke.

But then he started earnestly insisting that since Shepard was revived from death, death was now meaningless in that universe. Suddenly it wasn't a joke any more; he was actually being serious. And it was completely ridiculous because now all the things wrong with his arguments that we had ignored (because they would ruin the joke) we now had to dredge up and start arguing about because now it was serious business.
That wasn't fun.
