That's the most "scathing ship fandom" you've been in? I mean, it's no walk in the park, but really?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-30 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. I'll be honest - I haven't been in many fandoms. But I was surprised at this one though.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Crack!Ship? There's no such thing.
In all seriousness, I had no idea it was a crack ship from my outsider's perspective.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really consider it a crack ship either. To me, a crack ship is one where the characters either haven't met in canon or at least barely know each other. Joey and Kaiba have met numerous times during canon and hate each other, so they are prime rivalmance material to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. I dunno if I can even think of that many crack ships, as a matter of fact--most of them seem pretty legit to me. :)

/live and let ship

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I second this.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think this is crack-ship territory. I'd argue that these two are the #3 and #4 most important characters in the entire series. They know each other, have significant shared screen/page time, actually speak to each other (even if mostly in insults), et cetera. Yeah, it's foeyay, but foeyay isn't automatically crack. There are a lot of pairings in YGO that are a lot crackier than this.

I've recently started contributing and it went okay, so don't be shy.

Also... blast from the past, much? Isn't fandom half-dead anyway? I haven't seen any nastiness recently.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think calling it only half dead is pretty generous.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Yugioh abridged keeps it alive, I guess. Without that, it would have been dead years ago.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I see a lot more 5D's stuff now.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a crackship, though. I can't fucking stand it and think it's absurd when there are better people to pair both of them with imo, but it's not a crackship because they've actually interacted in canon. Multiple times.

Ha, I remember once venturing into a My Little Pony FiM board and stumbled into vitriolic rants being spewed by people insisting that Princess Celestia was not a troll, dammit! using blocks of text describing all the stuff she had to deal with. And I'm like...'kay, dude, I thought Trollestia was supposed to be a JOKE. You know, because it's FUNNY to picture Celestia sitting up there cackling and making lists of how to ruin Twilight's day for shits and giggles. I guess being in a fandom really causes some people to lose all perspective and logic. Fandom Myopia is one of the most bizarre (and often hilarious) things to witness from outside a fandom, but it's infuriating as fuck when you're inside the fandom, because it completely derails conversations and you can't persuade people out of their attitudes with logical arguments -- if they have some conception built up in their head, like a "totes srs bsns guise!" attitude towards a crack!ship, nothing is going to stop it until they themselves just snap out of it.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
wow

trollestia is fucking funny

if they don't like that kind of humor or if they really really like her as a character and find it kind of mean, they don't have to LIKE it or anything, but just, arguing about trollestia on a serious level is whatthefuckery at its finest.

Seconding all of this.

I was once reading a hilarious and amazing fandom discussion with a guy about Mass Effect 2, and he joked that Thane's long, slow, tragic terminal illness plot line was a little silly considering that Shepard had been brought back from the dead at the beginning of that very game. It was great, we all had a good laugh.
We all understood that Shepard's revival was an incredibly complex and expensive surgery that cost billions of dollars and massive resources from a giant shady organization. Nobody brought it up because that would ruin the joke.

But then he started earnestly insisting that since Shepard was revived from death, death was now meaningless in that universe. Suddenly it wasn't a joke any more; he was actually being serious. And it was completely ridiculous because now all the things wrong with his arguments that we had ignored (because they would ruin the joke) we now had to dredge up and start arguing about because now it was serious business.
That wasn't fun.

[identity profile] izelmecatl.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know this was considered a crackship. Also what are you talking about? Are people still into YGO to feel that passionate about a ship?

Man, I think I'm getting old.
Also don't let other people's bat shit craziness get you, do contribute--there's always room for good fan work!

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes and no. It's not really a crackship. They actually talk and interact, unlike some others (Silentshipping cough).

But damn there is a segment that can be nasty. God help you if you don't have Kaiba topping. Good luck if you're active in the fandom and don't ship them. Fandom also has a really hard time getting their characters right. You'll be knocked if you are IC, and knocked if you aren't. I understand very well, anon.

[identity profile] atom-bunny.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe I've been lucky (and maybe now I'm tempting fate) but I've never been flamed - and I've written Kaiba bottoming. *shrug*

[identity profile] luna-kishibara.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ship wars never bothered me in the YGO fandom. I just couldn't stand the overwhelming amount of fans who seriously thought that the Bakurae and Yuugi/Atem and Malik and his split personality actually had separate bodies and would write accordingly.

That, and the Anzu bashing. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I was kind of fine with them having their own bodies in a post-series setting or something like that, but NOT with them going to school with the others and suddenly being part of the gang.

And yeah, the Anzu bashing was terrible, and I'm glad that the most vicious bashers have moved on.

And I love your picture! It's from the Happy New Year clip, right?

[identity profile] luna-kishibara.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, yeah, I should have clarified - I liked some AUs with them having separate bodies, and I always loved the idea of Atem and Yami Bakura somehow coming back after the end. :3

and I'm glad that the most vicious bashers have moved on.

Oh, wow, I'm really happy to hear that. She was always one of my favorite characters.

And I love your picture! It's from the Happy New Year clip, right?

Thank you so much! And yes, it is. :D I was in the fandom over ten years ago, and I still remember the first time someone uploaded it. Kaiba dramatically yelling "NEW YEAR'S CARD, OOOOOPEN!" cracked me up. :)
