I don't really think there's anything wrong with wanting a game that's aesthetically pleasing to you, I mean if you have to spend however many hours staring at it...

Personally I'm always more bothered by the old design choices, many of which sucked. For example I bought this pack of games that had Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dales, Planescape Torment and so on, and I tried to play BG1 first and I just can't. deal. with the. interface. I got frustrated enough with the tutorial to just leave it, and then GoG had Fallout 1 for free and I've been playing that since. It's so so sosoosososo much better and intuitive in comparison.

Which is interesting since Fallout 1 predates most of those by at least a year.

Fallout 1 IMO is the RPG that all other RPGs should take lessons from.

Yeah I know, which I'm really appreciating, I'll probably have to pick up F2 sometime soon, even if I missed GoG haivng it for $3. Maybe if I had the BG manual it wouldn't have been so frustrating, but for now I've F1 and whenever I go back to that pack it'll probably be Planescape Torment or Icewind I try instead.

I should note that both games are the European versions, which include the children being removed from the game. This isn't that important in FO1 but it breaks some quests in FO2. There's patches for both that re-add them and fix major issues.

Here's Fallout 1:

http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_FIXT

Combines a number of patches, including the ones by TeamX.

Annnd here's Fallout 2:

http://www.killap.net/ Includes a few areas that were left on the cutting room floor, built from scratch (I actually played an early version of the EPA base -- the new version is much, much better.) This is optional, but honestly I think it's worth it 'cuz Fallout 2 is mostly kind of not very interesting otherwise.

That's... hrm. I actually did install FIXT for my first attempted playthrough but it screwed some things up so I just completely uninstalled and I've been just playing the vanilla version without any issues. Like I couldn't access any of the side areas in the Boneyard because it'd crash, as well as several NPCs, most of the towns got wiped out by Super Mutants (might have been me taking too long, not sure), and some NPCs were completely MIA (Aradesh, for one).

I will bookmark the F2 one though, hopefully it won't cause anything like that. Thanks!

I wasn't sure about FIXT -- I'd mostly been just using TeamX's patches. But I can vouch for F2RP.

wait wtf how have I never heard about this Fallout 2 missing content patch? how is that possible?

dethtoll, you have done me a great service this day.

There was quite a lot of things that were described in the Fallout Bible that never made it into the final game, such as the EPA. Some of it was in such an embryonic state it existed only as a few notes on a napkin. The Restoration Pack seeks to bring it all in, building most of it from scratch. There was a part, barely written out, where you could pick from three new companions, locked away in suspension, with their own quirks and skill sets. Their writing was largely done by a couple community members because their initial characterization was minimal.

I wish to god someone would add in the stuff from Van Buren that didn't make it into F:NV. how amazing would that be?

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
What's to add at this point? FONV basically IS VB at this point.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
a playable New Canaan (as opposed to Honest Hearts giving it and Graham like 2-3 hours of gameplay as a side quest) and a more integrated Legion would have been cool.

someone on Josh Sawyer's formspring was talking about the Daughters of Hecate, and it reminded me of how weird and interesting the VB design documents were. not that I don't love F:NV - it's near perfect - but it would still be cool to see some of those leftover ideas made into a mod. for obvious reasons, though, the people who nerd out about Van Buren aren't nerding out about New Vegas.

RPGs are too broad a genre to try and take it from one game. BGII is its own style. I'd rather not have seen it mimic Fallout 1.
